Week Commencing 17th July

Head Teachers Blog

Before I ‘Round up’ our year I would like to offer some important thank-yous.

Firstly to all our parents and carers, I would like to thank you for sending your children to our school and trusting us with them everyday. I especially want to thank you for supporting and encouraging them to achieve their personal best and for the support you offer us as a school.

Thank you to all those parents/carers who have sent messages of thanks for our teachers and support staff. It was my privilege to be able to read these to our staff at our end of year celebration on Friday evening. Your words mean everything to us. We know how important our responsibility is to educate and take care of your daughters and sons. Thank you also to our fabulous PTA – I hope you can join us for their quiz night next termThey are a tremendous support to the school.
Secondly I would like to offer my own personal thanks to our staff. Thomas Alleyne’s runs smoothly because of the teamwork between a huge group of dedicated people and I appreciate all of their work. Our site staff and their team of cleaners ensure the buildings and grounds are safe and the right environment for our young people; the ICT team continually look for new solutions to improve our communications and systems; our administrative team manage everything from first aid through to exams, our budget, attendance and the members of this team are often the first people you speak to when you phone our school. In addition to these teams I would like to thank our teaching assistants, curriculum area supervisors, and one-to-one tutors who provide such important support to our students. Finally to our teachers who have worked tirelessly this year to ensure they learn new specifications to ensure they can place your sons and daughters in the strongest possible position. They have also offered wider opportunities such as World Challenge, Duke of Edinburgh, Agricultural shows, Art Competitions and visits, House Music, House Drama, House chess, Maths challenges, Reading weeks and World Book Day, Public Speaking training, Coaching for Success and an incredible range of sports.

I would also like to thank our governing body led by Mrs Alison Trenery. We are fortunate to have such a strong and experienced governing body who continually reflect and challenge the school to ensure that we provide the best we can for our students. I appreciate both the challenge and support they offer the school.

This year we became one of the founder members of the Uttoxeter Learning Trust and now work under the leadership of Mike Osborne-Town – our CEO and the Trust Board chaired by Sid Slater. We are looking forward to other schools joining our trust and feel fortunate to have such expertise at CEO and Trust level to support us in continuing to improve our school.

Finally to our students.

When we ran our celebration assemblies today we shared with your sons and daughters how proud we are of the way in which they take care of each other and of their aspirations and determination to be the best they can be. To all our student leaders across the school thank you for all the work you have done supporting others this year.

We look forward to seeing Year 8 for our Summer school next week, Year 13 on the 17th August (from 7.30am) for their A level results and then Year 11 on the 24th August (from 9.00am). GCSE pod is always there for students who want to get ahead for next year as we have purchased a license for every student in the school.

If during the break you have any questions or concerns please email headteacher@tahs.org.uk.

We hope you have a wonderful Summer and look forward to seeing everyone back on Tuesday 5th September for our next academic year.

Business Enterprise Challenge

Congratulations to all the Year 12s who took part in the Business Enterprise Challenge at ‘Indulgence’ last week. The students all presented their unique business ideas and plans to judges David Hunter and Dawn Shirley. The ideas were all excellent ranging from Luxury Popcorn bars to Infant Sports clubs to an employment app for young people. Will Cooper, Alex Hayes and Johnathan Duckworth impressed the judges with their idea to create a youth employment app to match up Businesses with potential employees. Their prize, an opportunity to network at the Uttoxeter Business Breakfast club and some chocolate!

All the ideas were fantastic and the quality of Business plans produced by all the other groups was outstanding.

Thanks to David Hunter and Sue for hosting the event at Indulgence and thanks to Dawn Shirley for coming to be a judge.

Science Transition Work at Windsor Park

As part of our continued commitment to provide students with a smooth transition, science staff from TAHS and Dr Jones, a senior lecturer in organic chemistry at Keele University, provided a work shop on molecules for yr7 pupils at Windsor Park Middle school. The ‘Make it Molecular’ activity involved the students learning the molecular structure of common substances such as caffeine, salbutamol and even skatole, the ‘smell of death’. The students had great fun building all of these molecules using the molymod kits and then learning about the similarities and difference between their different structures.

Coaching for Success

Last week twenty pupils from our current yr10 cohort successfully completed the ‘Coaching for Success’ programme.  It was a challenging, but enjoyable two day course which took the students out of their comfort zones so that they could identify strategies that would enable them to improve their motivation, social skills and self confidence with a view to gaining higher exam results at the end of yr11. The programme empowers them to take increased responsibility for their learning and their school work.  At the end of the two days each student was matched with a member of staff from school, who has also been trained as part of the programme, to coach them over the next year.  Coaching will consist of regular meetings which will allow students to work towards goals that they have set themselves.

English News

It has been a busy year in the English Department. Teachers, students and pupils have worked hard to prepare for, and take, the new specification GCSE English Language, English Literature as well as A-level English Literature and A-level English Language. The positivity, endeavour and high-standards displayed by everybody involved were impressive from start to finish, and whatever outcomes pupils and students achieve, they can be proud of the way that they have conducted themselves. We wish them every success on results day, and for the future beyond.

Last week the whole of the school, both teachers and pupils, participated in Reading Week. During an extended form time of half-an-hour, pupils left their usual forms and joined reading groups comprising of pupils from all years and teachers. The purpose of the week is to raise the profile of reading for pleasure amongst the pupil body, and for them to see with their own eyes pupils of all ages and adults engaged in the activity. I would like to thank all of the pupils, students and staff who contributed to making the week a success.

Attendance Update

On 6 April 2017, the Supreme Court ruled unanimously against the father who had won an earlier legal battle in relation to a fine imposed following a term-time holiday taken without permission.
The Magistrates’ Court and the High Court had previously decided that the father had no case to answer because his daughter had attended school regularly, in that her attendance was over 90% for the academic year to date as at the end of the period of unauthorised absence.
The Supreme Court however disagreed, stating that ‘regularly’ did not mean ‘evenly spaced’ or ‘sufficiently often’ but instead ‘in accordance with attendance rules’. A leave of absence may only be granted by the school  in exceptional circumstances (Education Regulations 2006.)
The most common response to an unauthorised leave of absence is a fixed penalty notice, which is issued in Staffordshire by the local authority, depending on the local code of conduct, and which has a £60/£120 limit ( per parent / per child), depending on when the fine is paid. If the fine is paid then no further action is necessary. The Staffordshire Code of Conduct for issuing a penalty notice can be found at: https://www.staffordshire.gov.uk/education/welfareservice/ Attendance/home.aspx
Should you wish to discuss any issues in relation to your child’s attendance in school, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Thought of the Week

Assemblies week commencing 17th July
There are Year 9 and Year 10 Celebration assemblies on the last day of term
Thought for the Week
Given that it is the school walk on Tuesday the thoughts for the week are on the theme of ‘walking’
“When real people fall down in life, they get right back up and keep on walking.”
― Michael Patrick King
“Always walk as if you’re running late, it’s healthier.”
― Benny BellamacinaPiddly Poems for Children
“I am extremely happy walking on the downs…I like to have space to spread my mind out in.”
― Virginia Woolf
“It is solved by walking.”
― Latin proverb

Head Teachers Blog

As we complete our school year we have had the pleasure of seeing our students perform at Sports Day and as part of the House Music competition. In both events staff have commented on how impressed they have been by the way in which students have participated in the events and supported each other throughout. We are looking forward to celebrating with them in our celebration assemblies on Friday. A group of over 25 students set off on their Duke of Edinburgh expedition today we wish them well for their weekend.
We are very much looking forward to the Thomas Alleyne’s school walk on Tuesday. Unfortunately we have not received all letters of consent. Please can all parents/carers speak to their sons and daughters to ensure these are brought in on Monday. It should be a fantastic day. We will keep you updated about our progress on the school twitter feed.
If you have any questions regarding the next academic year please send them in to headteacher@tahs.org.uk and I will address these in next week’s newsletter.

Thomas Alleyne’s High School Farm – Runner up in National Award

We are very pleased to announce that our school farm came runners up as Community School Farm of the Year in a national gala award ceremony at the School Farms Network Education Alliance (SFNEA) Conference, held at the Royal Agricultural University (RAU) in Cirencester last week. Students and staff from school attended the 2 day conference which included the inaugural SFNEA Gala Awards Dinner on Friday night. This celebrated the very best of school farms from across the UK. The award was presented to students and staff at TAHS by TV presenter Adam Henson.

RAU Vice-Chancellor Professor Jo Price said: “Congratulations to all of entrants; the standard was incredibly high. We are so impressed by the achievements of all of the schools, teachers, and their students. Without all of your hard work, passion, and dedication, none of this would be possible – and for that, we sincerely thank you. The conference was a wonderful opportunity to meet staff and pupils from schools in the School Farms Network, and to exchange knowledge, hear success stories, and discuss the challenges and opportunities ahead.”

The Conference was attended by 100 teachers, students, and education practitioners from across the UK, and it was a golden opportunity for those passionate about school-based farm learning and developing pathways to higher education to come together and share knowledge and expertise. The conference explored the role of rearing farm livestock in schools, and the value of land-based education, including the areas of agriculture, business, technology, food security, and the environment. Justine North, the Head of Department at Uttoxeter Community Farm, ran a popular workshop during the conference on using the school farm in the curriculum. Meanwhile the five students were given a tour of the facilities on the campus as well as attending lectures and activities that introduced them to the possibilities of further study in the land based industries.

There were a number of key messages which shone through all of the sessions:
– We need bright young people in the future of the agri-food and wider land-based sector.
– School farms help students to become passionate about animals and farming practices.
– School farms enable students to build confidence and improve their academic performance.
– Young people are interested in where their food comes from, and the food supply chain.
– Conservation is a key part of agriculture, the two must go hand in hand.
– Education must be fun and hands-on, that’s when students learn and become inspired.
– Once inspired, we need to help students select the appropriate progression routes
– We need to promote the vast career opportunities in food and agriculture to young people.

Derby Theatre

This week Mrs Wheildon took the year 12 Drama and Theatre A Level students to Derby Theatre to work with their ‘in house’ designers, to understand the craft of stage design.
They worked with lighting designers, set and costume designers and directors to understand the process of stage design from ground plans to execution. Part of their complex new A Level specification requires them to write ‘as a designer’ so this was a fab spring board to start that area of study.
Mrs Wheildon was thoroughly impressed with the maturity and creativity of the students. A really interesting day.

End of Year Reports

Please be aware that Year 9, 10 and 12 reports will be available on Insight from 10am on Monday 17th July. These reports will include a pastoral report.

Year 10 Mock Exams & Results Day

Thank you to all Year 10 students for their hard work in preparing for the mock exams, and also for their excellent conduct throughout. We are all very proud of you.
Also, thank you to all parents/carers for the additional support and encouragement you have given. Your child will be handed their mock examination results in an envelope during an extended form period on Wednesday 19th July.
Good luck!

Unused Uniform?

If you have any good quality uniform that you can donate to the school please ask your child to drop it into the student support base any morning next week.
As a thank you we will issue 5 credits per student  in September.

6th form

As we approach the last week of term I would like to suggest that all Year 12 students are prepared for any summer work that needs to be completed before they return in September, it could be books to read, essays to write or even documentaries to watch to in order to be prepared for the topics in Year 13.
On Monday there is an assembly in the Common Room to explain about registrations and Health and Safety for the school walk. All Year 12 students must be there.
Tuesday is the school walk and unless a valid reason is given to a member of the 6th Form Team we will expect all students to attend as this is a compulsory school day. Some of the students have volunteered to Marshall and others are walking, all students must return a consent letter to their form tutor on Monday. If we do not have a consent letter they will be in school working on a set programme of learning.
Wednesday is Mock Results Day, in extended form they will be given the results of their mocks. This is to coincide with the Year 10 results morning. Members of staff will be available to discuss the results if needed. Hopefully your child has achieved their predicted grade, if not then it would beneficial for them to speak to their subject teacher and a member of the 6th Form Team before the end of term.

Do so now – tickets available via the school shop linked at the bottom of this page.

Biology Field Trip

On Tuesday our Year 12 students visited Formby sand dunes and pine forest to carry out a required practical as part of their A Level Biology course.

The students investigated the growing conditions of the marram grass – which helps to stabilise the sand dunes and prevent coastal erosion. Older sand dunes were found to have a lower density of marram grass, but higher plant species diversity overall when compared to younger dunes.

The light-level conditions in the pine forest were studied with respect to the location of lichen on the tree bark. The students concluded that the most favourable growing conditions were on the north facing tree trunks away from direct sunlight.
The students are now back in the lab analysing their data and presenting their findings!

GCSE Computer Science Evening

On Wednesday Mr Cartwright & Miss Smart welcomed the year 9 pupils and their parents into school for an induction to the new Computer Science qualification.
Students were left in no doubt about the rigors of the course and the dedication to their own learning required to be successful in this challenging yet rewarding subject.
Pupils were also given some summer bridging work to complete in preparation for September. For those unable to attend all resources have been posted home.

 School Walk 2017

Tuesday 18TH July is the bi-annual TAHS School Walk. This will involve all Year9, 10 and 12 students undertaking a walk around the Peak District, starting at Dovedale and finishing at Hulme End. This is a whole school charity event and in 2015 raised a total of £2400 for Cancer Research, The Douglas Macmillan Hospice and YESS charities. I am sure this year we can do even better and a big thank you to those students who have already handed in their sponsor money. Sponsor money can be paid in cash into the Finance Office or via ParentPay before Thursday 20th July. The forecast is for warm dry weather so we would advise all students to wear appropriate footwear and clothing and to wear sunscreen. Refreshments are available at Wetton Mill but we would still advise all students to bring some food and drink for along the walk. Can we also remind all students to return their consent forms before the walk on Tuesday.

A copy is linked below for you to print should you need to do so.

Afternoon Tea Challenge

Year 10 students this week took part in an afternoon tea challenge in food. They were given 1 hour to choose and plan 3 items to make within their group. They were then given 2 hours to cook them where everything had to be made from scratch. This was an excellent opportunity for students to practice their time keeping, presentation and team working skills as well as give them an idea what their practical exam will be like next year. Well done year 10 and keep practicing over the summer.

Head Teachers Blog

It has been a busy but inspiring week at TAHS this week.

Year 11 returned to the school on Monday to celebrate the official end of their year. It was wonderful to see them all and to have the opportunity to share in some of their memories of their time at Thomas Alleyne’s. We are thrilled that so many intend to return to join our sixth form next year.

On Tuesday and Wednesday Year 8 students joined us for their induction days. They made an excellent first impression on the school and we hope that they managed to get all their questions answered! If any parent does have any further queries please let us know.

Throughout the week Mrs Dodd has been running her comprehensive ‘Future Intentions’ programme for Year 12 students and parents. Students have had the opportunity to listen to a wide range of talks ranging from a talk on student finance to one which introduced them to the fantastic new resource ‘Unifrog’. We are excited by the support this will offer parents and students. Whilst we are only introducing the package to Year 12 initially we will be sharing it more widely with other students over the next academic year.

The Art exhibition on Thursday was an absolute joy to be able to visit. The work was inspiring and highlighted the dedication of the staff and students. We know how much hard work goes into preparing these final pieces. Uttoxeter Rotary held their Photographer of the year competition during the evening and I would like to congratulate all the students who took part – it was wonderful to see them collect their certificates.

Year 10 mock marking is well underway and results will be shared with students in the final week of term. Over the Summer some students will want to start some preparations for next year. GCSEpod is available for them to revisit topics they performed less well on or to support them in the more challenging work. We have just received a yearly report from GCSEpod and were amazed to find out that this year, in preparation for GCSEs, 39,000 podcasts were watched. This works out at about 3000 hours of study!

Finally I wanted to share with parents that I am delivering some very difficult assemblies to our students at the moment. I hope parents will be able to watch the video we are sharing with your sons and daughters so that you can discuss it with them .The link is below. The video is guidance on recommendations of how people should respond if there were a terrorist incident. If you have any questions please contact us.

Year 9 have already had their assembly. I will be speaking with Year 10 and 12 next week. Please reassure your sons and daughters that this is being shown as we have been advised by the Local Authority that school children should be briefed on the school plans if there were an incident.

RE Debate

Last week the RE Department hosted an ethical debate day with year 8 students from Windsor Park and Oldfield’s. This was a great opportunity for students to get to know each other, think critically and collaborate in a series of short debates. Many thanks to all who took part. It was lovely to see sixth form students work supporting students to develop ideas.

House Cricket

Thomas Alleyne’s house Cricket began on Monday, with Whitmore batting first against Torrance. Whitmore batted brilliantly hitting 141 off 13 overs with Archie Whitehead retiring on 52 and Joe Haywood 31. Lucas Rodgers came in and hit a quick 12 not out with Tom Bagnall and Jenson Bosworth taking deserved wickets for Orme. Torrance began well with Bosworth and Frankie Bussell scoring at a good rate. Whitehead caught Bosworth at slip off Haywood and Whitmore restricted the other batters with Jack Edge taking 2 wickets. Bussell batted superbly for 46 not out but Orme could only manage 98 off their allocation.

The second game saw Elkes bat first against Orme. Pick of the bowlers was Samantha Cotterell with 4 wickets. Top scorers for Elkes were Brad Cope with 10, Rob Minshall 9 and Jasmine Sutton 8, while all 3 hit good shots they couldn’t stay in Long enough to build a score. Elkes were all out for 57.Alfie Bednall 14 and Callum Dreher 18 knocked the runs off with ease after just 10 overs. The most pleasing thing about this year’s competition was the number of girls making a positive contribution with 6 girls in this game alone. This is credit to the work done by Miss Jones and Checkley coach Gavin Carr.

The 3rd, 4th place game took place on Tuesday morning with Torrance restricting Elkes to just 75 off 17 overs. Cricket debutant Chris Kitson took 3 wickets after excellent bowling from Frankie Bussell and Jack Bond who took 2 wickets each. Highlights for Elkes included a well struck 4 by Kyle Young and captain Kieron Coates not out on 11 and Lucy Carr 7 not out. Torrance had little trouble with the target with good hitting from Jenson Bosworth and Harvey Belcher. An excellent catch by Coates off the bowling of Cope at least gave Elkes a wicket.

The final began on a hot and sunny Wednesday with Whitmore batting. Orme bowled outstandingly with Bednall bowling Haywood and Thornton bowling Whitehead, when Thornton bowled Rodgers next over, Whitmore were in real trouble. Man of the match George Whitehurst then came to the rescue with 25 before he was caught behind by Dreher off the bowling of Sophie Lomas. Alex Ford then overcame a lean spell to push singles to get 15 not out. Whitmore finished on a competitive 90 off 16 overs. Whitmore depth off bowling paid off though with Orme struggling too score. Callum Dreher batted through the innings for 22 not out, with wickets shared between Whitehead, Ford and Matthew Meakin. The pick of the wickets came with an outstanding diving catch from Owen Carrington to dismiss Dylan Morley. Orme finished on just 68.

Final places 1st Whitmore, 2nd Orme, 3rd Torrance, 4th Elkes.

6th form

Wow, what a packed week this has been! Future Intensions really is intense.
Our Year 12 students have been brilliant, we have had outside speakers presenting about a range of topics which will give each and every one of the 6th Formers something to think about over the weekend and also in the months ahead.
On Tuesday we invited previous Head Boy, Dale Spratt, to give an insight into the application process and what students should expect when they attend university. Then Suki Thandai from WorkPays Organisation explained about the Apprenticeship scheme and showed each and every student how to log on to the government website so that they could see what was available to them. It was nice to see so many listening and asking Suki questions when they broke off into forms to research the Apprenticeships further.
Jason Turner gave advice on practical finance for the future and may have scared some when he talked about pay day loans, but this was the desired effect. We want our students to know about credit cards and loans and how they may have an impact on their credit rating in the future. Mr Robinson-White gave an inspiring talk which focused upon their personal statements and what they should include but also what they should not include, this inspired many to set off straight away and start planning their statement and Mrs Dodd has already been asked to check a first draft. Well done.
Mrs Walton and Mrs Young spoke to some about becoming a prefect and what this entails and Mrs Dodd trained the Senior Prefects in their role and her expectations of them. On Thursday Future Intentions was handed over to our students, Ellie and Saul who explained why we have Dougie Mac as our chosen charity and how important it is that we support them. They are our ‘forever’ charity.
Each form was then given 45 minutes to come up with suggestions that they could do to raise £50 per full term, the ideas that were fed back to the 6th Form Team and the students were excellent, amusing and also inspiring and we hope to see many of these materialise in the Autumn term.
Other events that happened this week were; Spelling Bee which was delivered by Mrs Bell and Mrs Fisher with some help also provided by Michael, student finance and budgeting which was provided by Staffordshire University and then on Friday all Year 12 were given the option to log onto UniFrog.
Please speak to your child and ask them what they learnt this week, all have now registered with UCAS so we would like to see them filling in their application as much as they can. First draft of the personal statements is due on the 17th July, this will give form tutors a chance to look over them and see what needs to be amended or included over the summer holidays ready to apply around October to December 2017.
It may seem scary but we hope that we have given them the tools to navigate their way through.
It was nice to see parents on Thursday for the HE Information Evening, remember your parent login for Unifrog is important, it will help you support your child in their journey.
If you would like further information, then please contact the Sixth Form office where we will be able to assist you.
Lastly the Senior Prefects organised a sporting activity to wind down the week, some of our students were playing rounders, others football and those that were too worn out were able to sit and enjoy the sunshine on the sports field and have some cake or ice lollies which were sold to help support the sixth form fund.

Sports Success

In March the trampolining team went to Paulet and competed in the first round of the school games. Our intermediate team qualified to attend the Level 3 Summer Games held at Keele University at the end of June. These are the only trampolining competitions held within the school year, so all their hard work and training comes down to performing a 10 bounce routine, twice. The best 3 scores are then taken from round 1 and the best 3 scores from round 2 and added together to create the team’s final score. The girls, Elsie Howell, Tilly Edwards, Abby Chilvers and Abby Walters, all performed fantastically and can use the competition towards their GCSE PE grade. Not only did they do themselves and the school proud, they also came 3rd in the county, which is a fantastic achievement. They attended a full day of competition, including opening and closing ceremony and also got to meet Sam Quegg, an Olympic gold medalist for hockey. Well done ladies and a huge thanks to Mrs Millington for helping to get them there and back.

Advice from Staffordshire Police

staffs police

I am sure that you are only too clear of the risks associated with the carrying of knives in public and want to do everything you can to protect your child(ren). Unfortunately the majority of knives and bladed articles that we find young people in possession of have come from their own home, so anything you can do to make sure your knives are as secure as they can be could make a huge difference.

Staffordshire Police are conducting a week long knife amnesty which starts on Monday 10th July to encourage those storing knives that could be dangerous to hand them in without any risk of prosecution. In every home in the county you will find knives. The amnesty is about getting rid of those that are surplus to requirements, particularly those that are ornamental, ex-military or combat styled which could easily end or ruin a life if used recklessly. If you don’t need it – just bin it.

You can hand them in at our Knife Amnesty bins that will be found either at your nearest police station or in some locations at your local waste and recycling centre. The full list of bin locations can be found at www.staffordshire.police.uk/bintheblade

You are not receiving this letter because your school has a problem with knives. We are working with schools across the County to educate children and parents as to the dangers associated with the carrying of knives.

Please spread the word of the amnesty and encourage everyone to get involved so that together we can reduce the risk of knife injury in Staffordshire.

Best wishes

Wayne Jones
Chief Superintendent of Local Policing and Operations
Staffordshire Police
