Head Teacher’s Blog

Thank you to all parents who joined us for our English evening on Wednesday. We were glad that people found it helpful in understanding the new GCSEs for English. If you were not able to attend but would like the information please contact the school office and we will forward the powerpoint used during the evening to you. On the same evening it was excellent to see the first rehearsals of Woman in Black now that the cast has been set.

Next week we are looking forward to our open evening and are very appreciative of all the students who have offered to help on the evening. For Year 11 parents we will be holding our sixth form evening on October 10th.

On Monday evening we will be visiting Ryecroft school at 4.00pm to give an introduction to Thomas Alleyne’s and answer questions from parents with children in Year 8. We will repeat this at Windsor Middle School on Tuesday evening.

During the day over the next two weeks we have Talk the Talk visiting our school once again. Last year they worked with our Year 9 developing their public speaking skills and they received excellent feedback. Each student is offered a full day workshop.

A few details are listed below:

Individual, pair and group activities teach and develop the use of structure in presentations, essay writing and exam answers.

Talk The Talk is a classroom-based workshop that highlights and nurtures employability skills, interview techniques and key presentation methods.

Every pupil is provided with a comprehensive workbook that they will use within the workshop and keep as a valuable revision resource for the future.’

We hope they will share their workbook and some of what they have learnt with you at the end of their day.

Year 9 Talk the Talk

On 2nd,3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th October Year 9 students at Thomas Alleyne’s High School will work with expert trainers from the education charity Talk The Talk. The company will work with 2 groups on each day. Each group will be based in a separate room.
Talk The Talk’s mission is to improve students’ communication skills to enable positive interaction in all life situations.

Talk The Talk has trained over 12,000 Year 9 & 10 students in the past twelve months in England and Wales and nearly 50,000 since we first started – using a programme developed over the past five years.

This exciting and engaging master-class in essential speaking and listening skills within a creative classroom environment teaches students how to use persuasive language techniques to get ‘their message’ across. The day highlights and nurtures employability skills, interview techniques and key presentation skills. Via numerous speaking opportunities, students are coached and supported throughout the day to deliver a structured two-minute presentation, on a topic for which they have a genuine passion, to their peers.

There is no doubt that grades open the door to opportunity for our students. But when they walk through that door – it is a completely different set of skills. We are striving to ensure that all young people are suitably equipped with the essential tools and skills to communicate confidently in a variety of situations – both within school and in their lives beyond.

Young people are reluctant to stand up and speak out. They are reticent in voicing their thoughts and opinions due to the fear of being wrong or being ridiculed by their peers. One of the keys to the success of the Talk The Talk programme is breaking down these barriers by creating an environment of mutual respect with a supportive ethos within the classroom. When students stand up and voice their opinions, share their thoughts and present their ideas – they are applauded by their peers and congratulated by their workshop leader and school staff alike. We demonstrate that speaking out is not a ‘life or death’ experience – but one that we CAN do – and one that is no way near as daunting as we might think.

Student Teachers?

It has been excellent to see year 12 students leading the learning at the start of lessons just four weeks into their A Level studies. Well done to a number of students in a range of subjects who are contributing to student leadership across the school.

Numeracy Problem

Parents/guardians – ask the students how they would go about answering this question, although there is only the one answer, there different ways to get to it.

Next week we are holding our Year 12 Parents Induction Evening on Thursday 5th October at 6.30pm in the theatre. The 6th Form team find it very beneficial to meet the parents in this informal environment. During the presentation, Mrs Dodd will be explaining the educational process and the pastoral support that is available to Year 12 students over the next two years. The focus of the presentation is to address issues raised by parents. This will be an opportunity for you to get an insight into life in our 6th Form, the expectations that we have of our students and for us to answer any queries that you may have. Primarily this is a parental event, students may attend, but most of the information I will cover formed part of their Year 12 induction. We look forward to seeing you there.

This week in form we have been pushing the urgency of Year 13 students to be working on their personal statements in preparation for their upcoming application to University, Apprenticeships or the world of work. I would hope that you continue with these conversations over the weekend and upcoming week. This will allow all staff involved to be able to spend time supporting them which should enable them to complete them sooner rather than later. The deadline for the UCAS application process is the week before Christmas. All teaching staff are currently inputting their tutor and subject references, which are also required to support the application.

The assembly this week, led by Mrs Dodd, was about making the days count from now until the end of the academic year for Year 12 and Year 13. All students have already had 90 hours teaching at school and there are 124 days left until Year 13 leave. It is important that all students make use of their time in school, as it is all valuable. We expect students to be in school from 8.40 until 3.05, we do not expect students to be wandering into town during their non-contact periods as we expect them to utilise break and lunchtime for this. We encourage all students to be using their non-contacts to complete work outside of the lesson, this can be super-curricular activities, wider reading, homework and also further research on their chosen subjects. We will be carrying out spot checks to ensure that this is happening.

We have also asked in any Year 12, who have ambitions of being a Senior Prefect, would like to volunteer on Wednesday 4th October at the Year 9 Open Evening. I’m sure many of remember looking round the school and we want our new Year 9 students to have a feel for the ethos and vibe of the school and our 6th Formers really help us to achieve a positive outcome.

World Mental Health Day

Tuesday 10th October 2017. Non uniform day.

To support Mental Health Day this year we are inviting students to contribute a £1 on our non uniform day.
All monies will go to supporting YESS counselling for students attending Thomas Alleyne’s.

We will also be introducing Amy Milner to our students over the next few weeks who will be working as a well-being practitioner with some of our students. Please contact your child’s Head of House should you require any further information.

Macmillan Coffee Morning

The staff enjoyed fantastic cakes and fresh coffee in the staff-room at break in the process raising £135 for the charity. Many thanks to those staff who showed off their baking skills for the rest of us to enjoy.

Science News

This week the students of class 10B Animal Care had a thoroughly enjoyable lesson on how to worm and then halter-train lambs. The experience was made memorable by some of the lambs being very stubborn indeed and requiring plenty of gentle persuasion! The purpose of the activity was to train young handlers and select suitable lamb side-kicks in preparation for the Staffordshire Winter Show at the Staffordshire County Showground later this year.

News from PE

U14 football v Cheadle

On Thursday evening Thomas Alleynes yr9 boys began their high school football career. On a lovely warm evening the boys were able to go through a long warm up to prepare as they waited for their opponents. The first game for us is always challenging as our opposition schools have been playing together since yr7. The 2 teams were evenly matched and played some good football. Cheadles tactics were more direct and their long balls held up in the lush turf to create goals with indecision at the back for Alleynes. Jed Brunt who was given the honour of captaining the side scored a sublime goal with his left foot curling the ball past the outstretched keeper. George Twigge then prodded home from a Callum Stockbridge strike. Final score Thomas Alleynes 2 Cheadle 3.

Year 10 Football

Last Thursday saw the year 10 football team have their first outing of the new season. A familiar team lined up against a well organise De Ferrers side. The game was a well fought contest with De Ferrers coming out on top with a 3-2 win. The next game is a home fixture against Westwood on Tuesday 3rd October.

Year 11 Football

Thursday night saw the year 11 team open their campaign of the new season against Cheadle High School. Led by Archie Whitehead, in central midfield the boys made an excellent to the game. Some very good football led to the first goal with Jay Ratcliffe scoring after a number of well played passes. Alleyne’s second goal came very soon after, with right back Brad Cope, player of the first half scoring from a deflected shot. The first half saw the team in total control of the game. Unfortunately the second half did not have the same result. starting sprightly Alleyne’s were awarded a penalty thanks to the dramatics of Robbie Minshall. Whitehead step forward to take the spot but missed! From that moment on Cheadle took heart from the miss and began to dominate the game. Alleyene’s dropped deeper and deeper into their half and conceded to quick goals. A third goal for Cheadle struck with 10 minutes to go was too much for the battling year 11’s. despite a change in formation the score remained at 3-2 at the final whistle. Next game is away to Pingle on Tuesday 3rd October

Well done to the year 13 history students who have already completed their coursework ahead of the final deadline.

Reminder – the next interim deadline is Monday 2nd October and the final deadline is Thursday 26th October, 2017.

Parents can support students at home by ensuring that the interim deadline is met: three sources and two historians should have been evaluated and students should have written over 3000 words in total.

Geography Musings

6th FORM ART & PHOTOGRAPHY VISITS

Year 11 Geographers have been studying the causes, effects and the management of flooding over the past few weeks, which is quite apt considering the weather we have been having recently. Students will be completing the exam question “Using a case study from the UK, describe a flood management scheme that you have studied and explain why it was needed in the area.” If any students feel they need more support with this topic or any topic they have covered for their exam, Mr Washbourne will be running revision sessions on a Thursday lunchtime in room 6 from 1.40 to 2.00.

Also, thank you to all of those students and parents who have paid for the GCSE/A Level Geography Revision Guides. The order will be placed next week and once the books have arrived in school students will need to collect their revision guides from either Mr Sabin or Mr Washbourne.

European Day of Languages

Tuesday 26th September was the European Day of Languages, celebrated as always by lesson activities within the Modern Languages Department. This year the theme was ‘J’ai un rêve’, (I have a dream).

We looked at this theme in the song “J’avais rêvé d’une autre vie” (I dreamed a dream) from the French production of Les Misérables, based on the epic story by Victor Hugo. This song tells a very sad story of dreams which were not fulfilled for the character Fantine. To brighten things up, we listened to “J’ai un rêve” from Raiponce, the French version of Rapunzel. Here we identified each character’s dreams for their lives.

Finally, pupils wrote out their own dreams for their lives in French using a variety of different sentence structures taken from the songs as well as a variety of tenses.

Maths – Year 11 Opportunity

All year 11 students have received a letter this week about the opportunity to purchase a set of maths practice exam papers. The set contains 6 papers with mark schemes and costs £2.50. The deadline for ordering the practice papers is Friday 6th October and payment is by parentpay or by requesting a barcoded letter in order to pay via paypoint.

The school will pay for any students eligible for Puplil Premium funding.

This is a great way for students to revise for their maths mock exam that will take place after Christmas.

News From Art

After school art club is being used by all years to develop their skills, complete homework and refine their coursework.

Great to see year 9 and the new year 10’s hard at work. We have awesome students who work very hard- keep going everyone! (see photos of our students at work). Art Club is available to 4pm Mon, Tues, Wed, Thurs and Friday- check with your teacher when they/ other art staff are available. Although we love to see eager students, please can we remind you students should not be staying behind after school without supervision.

Year 11- Dates for Diary

Very shortly, in November, the Year 11’s will be undertaking a 10 hour mock exam for their Art GCSE. This will be undertaken under strict Controlled conditions in the art rooms (no phones, no talking etc). This will give them an understanding of what they can/can’t do in the time allocated and the amount of preparation required for sucessful exam, in addition, the work done will also be supporting their art coursework.

Art Exam Parents Evening and on 9th January 2018 6pm Ede Studio

In preparation for the GCSE Art Externally Set Task (exam) we will be first releasing the exam papers at the Art Exam Parents Evening and on 9th January 2018 6:00-6:30pm in the Ede Studio. We will have exams from previous years on display and talking about the assessment objectives that students will be expected to cover as this is the first year of the New Specification. Students and their parents should attend if possible, letters will be sent closer to the date.

Our A Level Art /Photography students have spent 2 days out at Birmingham Botanical Gardens and Calke Abbey this week. Providing much need inspiration from the exhibits, artifacts and locations. the work created on the days will be used as part of their coursework development over the next few weeks. Old Art/Photo Work Collection Date

Old year 13 Fine Art/Photography/Applied Art and year 11 GCSE work can be collected on Wednesday 11th October 2017 between 3:30-5:30pm as previously noted. Mr Robinson and Mrs Derby will be around to help

However, Old Y11 Art GCSE work can now ALSO be collected on TUEDAY 17th October 2017 3:30-5:30pm Mrs Cornell will be available.

If you cannot come in person to collect your work, please send a note with a family member or friend to collect on your behalf.

Please note that some work will be retained by the Art Department for the impressive displays in the art rooms and around school. Also the AQA exam board may have requested examples too.

Head Teacher’s Blog

Our Head Girl and Head Boy, Iona and Ryan spoke some wise words on Friday as they led our Year 9 service at St Mary’s Church. Our thanks to Reverend Margaret Sherwin for hosting Year 9 and sharing her thoughts with us. Thanks also to our Year 10 and 11 girls who led the singing – we couldn’t have done it without you!

By lunchtime on Friday, our sixth formers had raised over £500 pounds on their ‘bring a pound’ day for Douglas MacMillan, their chosen charity. Not satisfied with this, they then went on to run a cake sale. The final total raised was over £600. Sixth form prefects have also been out supporting the school by taking on duties at lunchtime and break time. Thank you for your generosity.

We have now been back three weeks and it is fantastic to see that so many students are fully engaged with all that they do at our school. On Friday evening, students were still working on their art coursework and Year 9s were preparing for their football match against Moorside – we hope they have a great game. The cast for our school show ‘Woman in Black’ has now been set and the first rehearsal took place this week. We can’t wait to see the production. A ghost story just before Christmas – it couldn’t be better timed!

Our PTA met on Monday finalising the arrangements for the Quiz. It is an evening for adults and students alike and there are always a few family tables. If you would like tickets, please speak to a member of the PTA or contact our reception.

Finally, I would like to mention the first meeting of our School Council. We had over 34 students attend and are looking forward to seeing how they will be supporting the school.

Year 9 Welcome Service

Thank you to St Mary’s Church for hosting our Y9 Welcome Service this morning.
It was wonderful to see our y9 students take part in this formal welcome to life at Thomas Alleyne’s.

After introductions from Mrs Rudge our Head boy and girl spoke to year 9 about their journey through Thomas Alleyne’s.

An impressive version of “He’s got the whole world in his hand” was sung before Mr Hawthorne delivered the the reading “Footprints” and we concluded with a blessing from the Reverend.

An English evening will be held on Thursday 28th September for any year 9 or 10 parents wanting to find out more about English at TAHS.

There will a presentation on the new GCSE and what you can do to support your child at home. This will be followed by a presentation on literacy.

Raising funds for our chosen charity

Great work from our sixth form today raising £652.00 for Douglas MacMillan.

We would like to shine the light this week on a student who has had incredible success gaining a Higher Apprenticeship. We are thrilled that Sam our previous Headboy was successful in competing against 21,000 candidates to secure one of just 340 apprenticeships at Ernst & Young.

High Flying Kristi

Not only do our students thrive academically and socially at TAHS they also go that extra mile to find new experiences to enrich their lives, and that of others. One of our Year 13 students, Kristi Epple has recently completed a Skydive for World Challenge: this is her account.

In Summer 2018 I am participating in the national program ‘World Challenge’ travelling to Vietnam and Laos. In July this year I organised to participate in a SkyDiving event to help raise funds for this wonderful life- changing trip. On Wednesday, 20 September at the North London SkyDiving School I made my tandem jump with my instructor, Kevin. As flying and para-gliding are family pursuits I’ve been fortunate to try these out in the past. But …. SkyDiving was just that one step further and, I have to say, it’s THE best crazy experience I’ve ever had! This experience would not have been the same without my amazing instructor, who let me take control and fly the parachute down because of my enthusiasm and previous experience. It was wicked!!

Revision

All 6th formers are reminded to check with their subject teachers when revision sessions are available.

Mr Wright and Mrs Lindsay will be running weekly revision sessions to support students in preparation for the A Level RE exams; it is essential that we offer this support from the start of the year in order to revise as much as possible with students prior to the mock and summer exams.

Currently, we are running a session on Tuesdays after school – students are told in advance what the session will entail so that they can re-read their notes from last year as preparation. Sessions will run from 3.15 until 4.15.

We would be very grateful if you could support us by encouraging your daughter / son to attend, especially if they did not achieve their target grade in the Y12 Mock Exam. It is likely that we will change the revision to Thursday after Christmas as we are trying to accommodate students who have Senior Prefect responsibilities and who are committed to the school production.

Equipment for Maths Lessons

All students need to bring the following equipment to their maths lessons:

black or blue pen, green pen, pencil, ruler, rubber, protractor, compass and scientific calculator.

Literacy

Mrs Fisher and Mrs Bell from the English department have introduced two key spellings each week to be practised during registration. These are from a list of the 30 most commonly misspelled words. Please encourage students to learn these spellings using the ‘look, cover, write, check’ method at home. Science News

This week our Year 10 Biology students have been studying the rate of oxygen formation during photosynthesis using Elodea pondweed. The students investigated the effect of light intensity on the rate of photosynthesis by varying the distance of a lamp to the pondweed. The rate can be measured by counting the oxygen bubbles rising in water from the cut end of a piece of pondweed. Increasing the light intensity by moving a lamp closer to the pondweed produced an increase in oxygen bubble formation; indicating an increased rate of photosynthesis.

A food magazine recommendation – and it’s free!

Some of Y9 have been starting to make their swiss rolls this week with some good results. During my weekly shop, I noticed Tesco have a recipe for a patterned swiss roll in this month’s issue to have a go at.

Their magazines are free every month to pick up from the store and contain a range of recipes, information on ingredients and monthly vouchers. This is an excellent resource for students to practise their cooking at home and develop their food knowledge outside lessons. Please pick one up or the online magazine can be found at:

6th FORM ART & PHOTOGRAPHY VISITS

Next week the Art department will be taking students to the Birmingham Botanical Gardens and Calke Abbey to gain valuable ‘on location’ photography and drawing opportunities for their coursework. We will be drawing the architecture, the plant and exhibits such as birds and animals from the collections in Calke Abbey.Photos from our adventures will be uploaded onto Facebook and in next weeks bulletin.

Students don’t forget: a packed lunch, sensible footwear and coats for walking across gardens, sketchbooks/pencils for artists and cameras for photographers if you have them.

European Day of Languages Tuesdays – look out for J’ai un rêve in lessons

Interventions have started for year 11. Don’t forget Tuesday lunchtimes room 25 and Friday after school for writing and speaking skills.

Sets 9U4 and 9H5 French celebrated the Day of Peace on Thursday with some vocabulary revision based around the letters of the words “le jour de la paix”. They used words from our most recent lessons on family, numbers and descriptions.

If you wish to make any final orders for your child’s Year 9 Photograph, your order form needs to be handed into reception (with arrangement for payment) or completed online through Tempest by Monday 25th September at 9:00am if you wish to qualify for free postage and packaging. After this date, Tempest will charge £4 for this. All students have received their order forms containing a sample and the information on how to order. Orders are processed gradually over the next two months, when any photographs arrive into school they will be handed to your child immediately.

The show is cast and rehearsals are now underway for this year’s production!

Incredible talent in our midst:

At the weekend I love to go cycling in the Peak District and can completely understand why the sport has become so popular after the performance of our British cycling team in the Olympics. I cycle however purely as a hobby.

It is only over the last couple of months that I have become aware of the incredible talent that Josie and Lucy Nelson have in the sport of cycling.

On the 9th September Josie and Lucy both came 2nd in their age groups in the Welsh National Circuit Championships. Josie also came 2nd in the British National Cross County Mountain Biking Championship in July. Lucy has been undeterred by a knee injury and after 18 months off her bike returned to competition this Summer and was placed in the top 10 in the UK for her age group.

What is most inspiring about both Lucy and Josie is that they appear to balance their lives so well. Despite gruelling training schedules Josie managed 100% attendance last year and both girls continue to do well in their studies at school.

They are an inspiration.

Similarly in Derby this week you may have seen that 3 of our sixth form students performed in West Side Story at Derby Theatre.

Head boy Ryan, who is currently studying ICT, Drama and English, took the lead as Tony.

The review below gives us an indication of how special the performance was.

”This is the first full theatre production that I’ve seen for well over a month, due to the theatre season pause, and this company re awakened my love for this wonderful, and very energetic musical. It actually left me quite drained of emotion because of the emotion these actors put into their performances.

Tony is played by Ryan Wiggins, a young actor I’ve seen on several occasions. He fits this role so well; he’s good looking and has that “boy next door” attitude which is just what Tony should be. He also has the most wonderful voice with such range. I’ve seen Ryan’s Raoul, and that that was good; this performance bettered that. His control, especially in his falsetto, was spine tinglingly magical.
Tony’s “Juliet” is Maria, sister of Bernardo, the leader of the Sharks, and played by the lovely Mia Mitchell. Having met Mia a few weeks ago, I knew what a gorgeously talented teenager she is. What I hadn’t been aware of was what a beautiful voice she owns. Crystal clear and those notes just flow effortlessly from her mouth. These two, Ryan and Mia, are a theatrical match made in heaven.”

Like Josie and Lucy, Ryan manages to balance his commitments outside school, his academic studies with his work as our Head boy. He is clear about his ambitions and we wish him all the best in achieving these.

We know that we do not have the chance to celebrate all of our students’ achievements outside school as sometimes we are simply not aware of their success. If your son or daughter has been successful on the track, field, in dance, poetry, drama or music please let us know.

Equally if they are one of those very special young people who are young carers or who volunteer for charity work we would love to recognise the contributions they make to our community.

Lucy will race again at the end of September in Holland and will complete against the World Champion Kirsten Wilde whilst Josie will be competing in the British inter regional championships at the end of the month. We wish them all the best for their races.

This week Mrs Wheildon has been auditioning for Woman in Black which I know will be a wonderful treat for us all just before Christmas. To be honest I can’t wait to see their version of this ghost story.

A round of applause for BTEC Health & Social Care Students

Last week saw the end of the induction week for BTEC Health & Social Care students who were giving presentations on the theme of equality. The range of ideas and formats they chose to present in were amazing and the themes of respect, celebrating diversity and non-judgemental attitudes were so inspiring for the group and also a reminder for everyone, that we all should be treating people with respect, irrespective of any differences between us.

The winning presentation comes from Rosie Pettitt who worked meticulously to create over 500 stills which, when played together make a great film about equality. Please take a few minutes to watch the film by clicking the vimeo logo below, and I’m sure you will agree.

Attendance update – holidays in term time

On 6 April 2017, the Supreme Court ruled unanimously against the father who had won an earlier legal battle in relation to a fine imposed following a term-time holiday taken without permission.

The Magistrates’ Court and the High Court had previously decided that the father had no case to answer because his daughter had attended school regularly, in that her attendance was over 90% for the academic year to date as at the end of the period of unauthorised absence.

The Supreme Court however disagreed, stating that ‘regularly’ did not mean ‘evenly spaced’ or ‘sufficiently often’ but instead ‘in accordance with attendance rules’. A leave of absence may only be granted by the school in exceptional circumstances (Education Regulations 2006.)

The most common response to an unauthorised leave of absence is a fixed penalty notice, which is issued in Staffordshire by the local authority, depending on the local code of conduct, and which has a £60/£120 limit ( per parent / per child), depending on when the fine is paid. If the fine is paid then no further action is necessary. Sixth form update

The assembly this week is about change from Year 11 and GCSE to Year 12 and A Levels and how to deal with the pressures that this may bring. Mr Wright explained that it is useful to find an outlet and that a positive attitude and acceptance of change will allow each person to deal with the transitions. It is also advised that if your son or daughter is finding the change from GCSE’s to A Level’s difficult then they should speak to their subject teachers sooner rather than later.

Please can we remind parents that all visitors must sign it at reception if they need to speak to a member of the Sixth Form Team. This will allow the correct person of contact to be notified and allow us to deal with your query more efficiently.

Reminder parking: Students are encouraged to park in the B&Q carpark as we are not able to have student cars on site during the school day.

We have been given notice of an exciting event which allows all budding engineers to see first-hand what an Apprenticeship in Engineering would be like.

Whole School Charity Event – Friday 22nd September – Dougie Mac Hospice Bring a Pound Day.

During registration on the morning of the 22nd September the 6th Form Charity respresentatives will be visiting the form groups to collect the £1’s. £570 was raised in just 20 minutes during registration time last year. We are looking to top that amount this year.

Science News

This week Mr Gilson’s Year 11 Biology groups have been exploring how the characteristics of offspring are inherited from their parents. The students constructed ‘Reebop’ models; which are imagined animals, made from marshmallows, pipe cleaners, pins and cocktail sticks.

Reebobs have 16 chromosomes (in 8 homologous pairs) in their body cells. The practical is intended to illustrate meiosis – the two stage process of cell division that reduces the chromosome number of daughter cells thereby forming the gametes or sex cells.
Students work in pairs – one student has a set of ‘mum’s chromosomes’ and another student a set of ‘dad’s chromosomes’; the genetic make-up of the ‘New’ offspring is randomly selected.

Once the genotype (genetic make-up) of the offspring has been determined, the students build their offspring to achieve the phenotype (what the offspring actually looks like).
Students then place their ‘baby Reebop’ into the crèche and discuss the differences between each of the Reebop offspring and the differences with their Reebop parents.
The lesson illustrates the way in which meiosis is responsible for the tremendous variation in offspring in any species.

It has been fantastic to welcome students back to school this week. I have been impressed by the way in which they have applied themselves in lessons and around the building. Year 9 seem to be finding their way around school quickly. If you have any queries please contact your child’s form tutor or Head of House.

Over the Summer the school has been far from quiet. In August Year 11 and Year 13 students collected their examination results. Once again students at Thomas Alleyne’s have made more progress than in schools nationally.

74% achieved a pass in English and 69% of the cohort achieved a pass in Maths. In Maths 18% of the cohort achieved the highest grades 9 or 8 on the newly designed GCSEs. Performance in Science was also strong with 28% of students, who studied Physics, Chemistry, Biology, achieving an A or A*. Similarly over 25% of PE and Art students attained an A* or A grade.
These results include the new GCSEs for English Language, English Literature and mathematics which are graded on a one to nine scale. The grade 9s have been designed to recognise the top 3% of students in individual subjects across the country. This year Hannah Brown from Marchington achieved an incredible 10 GCSEs at the highest possible A* or above which includes 3 grade 9s. Ruby Wollard from Tean achieved an impressive set of GCSEs with 8A* and 1 A grades; along with Joanna Thornett from Hollington 7A*and 2 A, James Cooksedge from Doveridge 7A* and 4As; Lauren Walker from Uttoxeter 3A* and 8As, Callum Perett from Tean 4 A* and 4As, Phillipa Dale and Hannah Ufton achieved 8 A grades or above. Joseph Martin from Uttoxeter 2A* 7As, and Isla Stubbs 2A*, 6 A grades and 1 B.
They were amongst a large group of 32 students who all achieved at least 5 A/A*s the group included: Katie Hall, Milly Radley, Livia Robinson, Sara Coxon, Georgia Cumming, Zachary Wright, Rachel Clemett, Katie Arnold, Ewan Haas, Abbie Keeling, John Simister, Alice Smith, Bryony Hall, Adam Richards, Euan Rodger, Laura Stones, Harry Thorne, Harry Whitehouse, Mackenzie Smith, Lydia Grocott, Jessica Poole and Adam Burrows.
In the first year of the new GCSEs 99 students, 40% of the cohort, achieved at least 1 A*/A in an area of their specialism.

Sixth form students have similarly produced another fantastic set of individual results in their exams this year.

The pass rate was 98% which has once again enabled students to secure top university places including Oxbrdige and Higher Apprenticeships as well as enter into the world of work.

Vocational subjects have continued to secure superb results with a 100% pass rate which will place students in the top 1% nationally for their achievement.

A high proportion of students achieved exceptional A-level results, and the vast majority of students have been successful in securing places at their first choice university.

In addition to this Eve Abram, Victoria Clinton and Aislyn Hall secured places to study music at the prestigious Birmingham and Leeds Conservatoire schools of music.

Academic success is important in our school, however along with it we are passionate in providing opportunities to ensure students have chance to develop skills in teamwork, independence, resilience and creativity. In August over 70 community-minded Year 11 students took part in the National Citizenship project, spending time in a local University, raising significant amounts for charity and completing a range of outdoor activities. Experiences like this give our students the opportunity to understand the world around them a little better and also helps them foster confidence, tolerance and perseverance.

Whilst the main school have been away our Site staff and ICT team at the school have been busy improving facilities for students return. We have replaced our central server at school which supports our computer network. This will provide us with an improved service. We know parents may have had to change passwords and apologise for any inconvenience caused. If you have any unresolved queries please contact the school directly. During the Summer our site team had a substantial amount of the school lighting replaced to improve the environment in classrooms.
We wish all students a happy and productive year with us this year.

School Bus Service

We are aware of a number of concerns around the bus which services the Marchington and Draycott route. The school has shared their own concerns with School transport regarding this service. We urge parents to contact School transport directly.

SSAT Celebration Conference

Mr Brunt and Mrs Lindsay were delighted to attend the celebration conference in London on Friday to celebrate the work all teaching staff have contributed to over two years with Assessment for Learning with a national ‘Embedding Formative Assessment Project’. The school has been awarded a certificate for their contribution to developing teaching and learning nationally and in school.

School Canteen Service

Free school meals allowance is £2.25, this covers a meal at lunctime with a pudding, anything else needs to have money put on the account.
From next week any student who is overdrawn will have service withdrawn unless the office have had contact with the person who tops up the account.
please can parents/carers make sure that any top up on parent pay has been moved across to ‘pay dinner money’

What a great first week back we have had in the 6th Form. We have talked endlessly about the success of our previous year group and where the next chapter of their lives is going to be and how incredibly proud we were of all of them. You will have read some wonderful stories about some of our students in the local press, especially about Adam. His father became seriously ill just before his A level exams, and he worked tirelessly to ensure he achieved the best grades possibly. Well done. He is an inspirational to us all that can we achieve if we want something enough.

We have had an excellent start in Year 12. Tuesday saw all of our lovely new Year 12 students have their induction day with Mrs Dodd and receive their new academic timetable. They looked confident and ready to learn.

PE Extra Curricula

The PE department have hit the ground running with year 10 and 11 Boys Rugby and year 10 and 11 Netball as well as swimming all taking place on Wednesday. Year 10 & 11 boys football began on Thursday and as I write badminton and Year 9 football is taking place.

Science News

As in previous years we will be running our coveted Science Students of the Week Award. Each week two students from Year 9, 10 and 11 are nominated by their Science teachers in recognition of outstanding effort and positive attitude towards their Science studies.
We will also be running our fortnightly Environmental Land Based Science Students of the Week Award for our Year 11 students, and an award for our Year 10 students studying the new BTech Animal Care course.

Respect Programme

Students at Thomas Alleyne’s High School will be studying a range of issues and topics in their Respect Programme. To start with, they will be trying to understand what the word “Respect” means to them as well as celebrating themselves by decorating their own tutor group posters so that they take pride as a collective. After this, Years 9 and 10 will be studying British Values and Year 11 will be studying Work Related Learning. British Values looks into the idea of Democracy, the Rule of Law and Challenging Discrimination. Work Related Learning looks at Job Applications, Letters of Applications, CVs and Interviews that will prepare young people for their future endeavours. Further information about the Respect programme can be found by your child’s form tutor, Head of House or Mr Hawthorne (Leader of Respect Programme).

Year 9 Photographs

Year 9 students will be having their individual photograph taken on Wednesday morning, further details on purchasing these from Tempest Photography will follow in due course. The photographs will be taken on the morning of 13th September.

Old Art/Photo work collection date

However, Old Y11 Art GCSE work can now ALSO be collected on TUEDAY 17th October 2017 3:30-5:30pm Mrs Cornell will be available.

If you cannot come in person to collect your work, please send a note with a family member or friend to collect on your behalf.

Please note that some work will be retained by the Art Department for the impressive displays in the art rooms and around school. Also the AQA exam board may have requested examples too.

Any work NOT collected or on display will be disposed of- Don’t miss out!

The maths department were really pleased to see so many year 11 students starting their revision so early in the year. Long may this continue. Well done to all those who came along.

ULT Finance Director

New Trustee Needed for the Uttoxeter Learning Trust

Want to give something back to help your local community? Have you the financial/audit experience and expertise required to lead the trustees in supporting and challenging the schools in the Uttoxeter Learning Trust? This is like the role of the chair of the finance committee of the school governors, but it covers all of the schools in the ULT multi-academy trust. The ULT Board of Trustees sits above the school Governing Bodies and holds all of the schools to account. Like a school governor, it is a voluntary, unpaid, but very responsible, role. You would be expected to chair the ULT Finance Committee at their half-termly meetings and to report back at the Board of Trustees meetings which are also half-termly. Both start at 5.30pm and last no longer than 2 hours. It’s a challenging role, but very rewarding.
