Subject of the week: social work and community care
A Subjects library profile for students who want to make a positive difference in people’s lives
With a social work and community care degree, you could end up working in areas like child protection, family support, or support for the homeless.
In this Subjects library profile, we show you how to make a strong application for this degree, and equip you with all the details you’ll need.
> Find it here (remember to sign in as a student first)
There are lots of routes into this subject – like studying an apprenticeship! Read more about our Apprenticeships tool below…
Bridge the gap with Unifrog’s Apprenticeships tool
Addressing the ethnicity gap in apprenticeships this International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (21 March)
The Sutton Trust reported in December that young people of colour are significantly under-represented in apprenticeship starts. White British students account for 90% of apprenticeship starts in 16-18-year-olds.
Unifrog’s Apprenticeships tool helps your students find opportunities based on the things that matter to them. They can search by distance from home and subjects of interest, and rank their results by things like student recommendations and weekly wage.

For parents and caregivers: what are apprenticeships?
Traditionally, vocational courses were seen as a route for ‘non-academic’ students. But modern apprenticeships are challenging, well-respected, and sometimes the better choice for getting into a particular industry.
In this guide, we show your parent and caregiver community what apprenticeships are, and why they may or may not be a good fit for their children.
St Mary’s: masterclass for students interested in teaching
‘Get into Teaching and Education’ Masterclass Day: Wednesday 21 June, online
St Mary’s Institute of Education is hosting a free, virtual masterclass for your students who are interested in becoming teachers.
It’ll include taster sessions to give a students a feel for different teaching and education degree options, and cover topics like pathways into teaching and interview preparation.
This is a government initiative to get more students cyber aware and consider a career in Cyber Security. Unfortunately we don’t have time in lessons for students to access this in school but highly encourage them to take part as extra curricular.
If anyone takes part and wants support please do contact Mrs Hadfield.
GCSE Intervention
With the deadline for the coursework coming up shortly I’ve been asked again when the GCSE Intervention sessions are so thought I would share with all. For both Computer Science and IT there is an afterschool session on Thursdays 3:05-4 in C3 in addition to the lunchtime session on a Tuesday in C3.
The coursework hand in deadline for IT is 31/3/23. At that point work in the accounts will be marked.
The exams for both subjects start on week beginning 15th May so students are actively encouraged to continue with revision homework’s set on Talaxy. Every session complete will make a difference to what they can achieve.
Despite the cold weather, spring is definitely with us and the exam season for many of our students is now looming on the horizon. On behalf of the governing body, students and parents, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the staff who are going above and beyond over the Easter holidays (and on subsequent Saturdays) to provide revision and exam preparation for the students. The range and number of sessions being provided is exceptional and all of this being provided in their own time because staff want to be there to ensure the students have the best possible opportunities.
Please see below information on apprenticeships, careers, courses and degrees.
