English Students of the Week

Well done to all of the students who were nominated by your teachers for this week’s student of the week award in English:

Y9 Louie R, Evie B, Bethany S, Lola T, Billie O, Emma-Louise O, Kieren C

Y10 Sam L, Finn P, Izzie H, Sophia A

Y11 Eloise P, Harry F, Xanthe S, Thomas L, Joe H, Lochlann H, Mya

Y12 Philippa B

There are only 2 weeks to go until the deadline (June 10th).

This week’s tip is to really think about your ending.Have you fully resolved your story, with a clear resolution? If you’re writing an essay, has your thesis statement (your “golden thread” of argument) led to a clear end point?

Work of the Week

Year 12 Literature students have this week been given the opportunity to “turn teacher,” presenting a lesson to their class on one of their set poems. Phillipa taught the class about Christina Rossetti’s poem “Remember,” which features in their “Love through the Ages” anthology of poetry. Here is a slide from the powerpoint she produced to support her brilliant presentation:

Book recommendation

We asked 9UL to recommend books this week – and they couldn’t decide. So here is a bumper crop of half term reading suggestions:

“a good girl’s guide to murder” by Holly Jackson – recommended by Colette – is a fantastic “whodunnit” that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Billie recommends “It’s Behind You” by Kathryn Foxfield – a mix of reality TV show and horror/thriller. Finally, Theo recommends Peter’s Crouch’s autobiography, for those of you pining the end of the football season.

GCSE Maths – Breakfast Revision

We were very happy to see over 100 Y11 students attend the breakfast revision session this morning before the GCSE maths exam.  The students who attended have commented how useful they thought it was.

The next maths exams are on Tuesday 7th June and Monday 13th June.

Before each of these the maths department will be running breakfast revision sessions from 8-8.30am.

This will give students the opportunity to get their brains into ‘maths mode’, ask any last minute questions and complete some focussed revision based on the advanced exam information for each paper.

Students will need the following equipment for their maths exams: black pen, pencil, ruler, rubber, protractor, compass and scientific calculator

Calculators can be purchased through the online shop, everything else can be purchased from the maths department.

Free Latin session for KS3 online learning in the summer.

Please see the link below if you are interested in finding out more about the Latin Summer School. No prior knowledge is required but there will be a mixture of activities about one of the oldest languages in the world.

Friday 27th May – Year 11

Friday 27th May will be the last day that Year 11 students are required to be in school. In the morning all students will be completing their GCSE Chemistry exam. This exam is due to end at 10.15am where students will have their usual break time and attend their period two lesson. Students that are entitled to extra time will be given a short break and then will also return to their period two lesson.

At 11.30am students will be invited to the canteen to enjoy a final complimentary brunch with their peers and staff. Students are then requested to make their way to the field where they can enjoy some time with their friends and take part in signing each other’s shirts. We would request that students bring a spare shirt to be written on.  We want students to really enjoy this final day but we must insist that students are considerate of what they write on the shirts and if we feel that a student has not complied with this we will contact family and request that the student is collected from school or asked to leave the site.

Students will be able to remain on the school field until 12.50pm at which time we will be asking students to make their way off site.

Computer Science Students – For students that are completing their GCSE Computer Science exam, we have arranged for Mr Cartwright to be available from 11.30am in room 43 for students that would like the opportunity to take part in final revision before the examination in the afternoon.

Her investigation was really interesting, and the text is too!

Y 11 Lewis M, Eva G, Sylvia S, Livvy E, Jack W, Josh W, Alfie H, Daisy C, Tasha M, Lucy M, Jasmin W, Sadie O’B, Emma W, Katie D, Joe Ha, Thomas L, Alex B, Charlotte J, Beth J, Ella R

Y 12 Tess S

Y 13 Imogen N, Eve B

There are 4 weeks to go until the deadline (June 10th).

This week’s tip is to really build a sense of place, or mood. Try to use adjectives and verbs which are ambitious, but more importantly, that are clear and precise. Try analysing your own choices – if someone else were to read them, would they convey the message you think they do? Look at our work of the week for more inspiration.

Y11 exams – revision

Keeping on the theme of writing, Year 11 have their Paper 1 exam next week. For last minute creative writing inspiration, try https://randomwordgenerator.com/. You can choose by word class (“write a story entitled <random word>”), or even find random images. Thanks to Harriet G for the tip.

Mr Hulme is running “An Inspector Calls” revision on Wednesday 18th, which is also the day of Language Paper 1.

Members of the English team will be in the English rooms from 7:45 on the morning of the exam, for drop in reassurance / last minute clarifications.

Work of the Week

Elisha in 9UD has been working on analysis of writers’ choices/methods. Here you can see her using the what – how – why frame to develop her thinking.

Billy in Y11 has been honing his genre writing skills – we think this is a brilliant opening paragraph… and the rest of his narrative is a very thrilling read. We particularly like the personification of dawn, which nods nicely to Greek epics like the Odyssey.

Swathes of green and blue gently rocked the longship as she sliced swiftly through the swirling sea. Her prow cut the waves like the swords at the belts of her sleeping crew. Dawn was thrusting its bright head above the horizon to the east and the faint outline of friendly Viking lands could be seen ahead. The only one awake was the helmsman. He held his steering board firmly in his hands as he guided the ship skillfully on his own towards the distant hulk of land. Fingers of blue were ripping apart the woven purple fabric of the sky and blissful light streamed down on the muscular, sleeping bodies on the deck.

Well done to Elisha and Billy!

Book recommendation

Mrs Hunt wants to make a recommendation this week: “Humble Pi” by Matt Parker. It’s a non-fiction book exploring what can go wrong when people don’t get their maths right. Whilst it’s been a little tricky to understand in parts, it’s a fascinating read and definitely one for (aspiring) A Level mathematicians, engineers, or chemists. There are four ‘deliberate’ mistakes in the book, and Mrs Hunt has spotted two. If anyone can enlighten her as to the last two, she’ll be eternally grateful…

Year 9 County Rugby 7’s

On Thursday our U14 rugby team travelled to Stafford Rugby for the County Rugby 7’s Finals.  Playing on fantastic facilities the tournament was very well organised and all games played in a great spirit.  Unfortunately we didn’t perform to our best and made a number of uncharacteristic errors. We battled hard in all 6 games winning 2 and losing 4.  Player of the tournament was Corey, Try of the tournament went to Jonte with a length of the field special.  Tackle of the tournament went to Adam F.

Under 15 County Cricket

On Thursday evening the U15 Cricket team travelled to Newcastle and Hartshill Cricket Club to play Clayton Hall.  Alleyne’s won the toss and elected to field. After the second over the decision to bowl by captain Minshall proved to be a good as Griffiths took the wicket over their opening batsman and in the fifth over Ashton took the second wicket with only 17 runs being added.  Unfortunately despite some imaginative fielding positions and strong bowling Alleyn’es were unable to make inroads into the middle order.  Minshall called upon a variety of bowlers but Clayton started to get into the match, their opening batsman hitting an unbeaten 54.  With plenty of wickets in hand Clayton accelerated the scoring in the middle overs.  With 3 overs to go Bulmer and Higgs were able to pull the rate back to 16 runs off 3 overs.  Clayton’s innings closed at 143 for 4 of 16 overs.  This left Alleyne’s with plenty to do.  Captain Minshall and Cantrill opened the batting with an explosive start, scoring 25 runs off the first three overs.  Both Cantrill and Minshall regularly hitting the boundary in their inning.  Unfortunately, Cantrill fell to the last ball of the third over and Alleyen’s couldn’t quite gain the same momentum that the openrs had set. They lost 2 quick wickets to some fast, accurate bowling from the home side. There was some resistance offered from Layton, Higgs and MInshall but the match was getting away from the visitors. Alleyne’s were reduced to 41 for 6 off 8 overs.  In the closing overs Minshall started to accelerate the run rate with an excellent unbeaten 57 but time and strong bowling was against him. Clayton eventually won the game by 48 runs.

English

There are 5 weeks to go until the deadline (June 10th).

This week’s tip is to think about your starting, and ending, points. It can be easy to write a story (or an essay) which essentially says “and then… and then… and then…” but it’s not very interesting to read. Why not start in media res (in the middle of the action)? Similarly, make sure you know where you’re heading. We like our analogies in English, so think of it like a journey. Are you aimlessly driving around the local roads (storylines) until you run out of fuel (words)? Or do you have a set destination in mind, and enough fuel to get there?Work of the Week

We love it when a teacher from another subject sends us something “Englishy” their students have done. This week, Y9 have been working on raps in Music. Mrs Todd was so impressed with Teigan’s, she just had to tell us all about it. We were impressed too! Here’s some of Teigan’s rap, entitled You No Longer Know Me.

You don’t know her favourite song anymore.

She changed it.

It was Pompeii, but that’s the same as yours,
and now it’s new rules.

Got a new haircut – it’s quite short and it’s blonde, too.

Not like her long brown hair you used to put behind her ear.

Well done, Teigan!

Book recommendation

Imogen in Year 13 thinks everyone should read “Emma” by Jane Austen. She thinks it’s a great explanation of life as a woman in Regency England, but it’s also a really engaging storyline. Luckily, it’s out of copyright, so you can even read it online! Emma, By Jane Austen
