Progress Opportunity Individuality

Welcome

Students have been embracing a wide range of opportunities offered to them this week. Thank you to everyone who joined us for our Year 11 revision evening this week and congratulations to all students who took part in the House Cross County and Geography field trips.

Year 11 and 13 trial examinations will commence on 21st November. Please remind your daughters and sons to ensure they put in place revision plans to support them in making excellent progress over the coming weeks. Examples of plans can be found at GCSEpod. We have purchased a subscription to this superb package for every student in the school regardless of year group. Their “swift” logins, coupled with “frequent” practice, will lead to “tangible” progress. (See English update for further details regarding our words of the week) https://www.gcsepod.com/

We are looking forward to meeting Year 8 students to our open evening on Wednesday which starts at 6.00pm. If you have friends outside our catchment who would like to see what is on offer at our school, please let them know that they very welcome to join us for the evening. The following week we look forward to seeing Year 11 students at our sixth form open evening.

Department News

English

We’re getting very excited about the impending trip to see An Inspector Calls. Students who have already reserved a place, or who are in receipt of Pupil Premium funding, have been issued consent forms this week. Mr Hulme has asked that these are returned asap, in order that places can be confirmed. If you have been allocated a place, and no longer wish to take up this opportunity, please let us know asap as there are quite a few students on a waiting list hoping a place becomes available.

Bedrock: Vanquishing villanous vocabulary!

English teachers are reporting some superb commitment from Y9 to their vocabulary homework this week, as all classes begin their Bedrock journeys. Their “swift” logins, coupled with “frequent” practice, is leading to “tangible” progress. No longer are we “apprehensive” as we “endeavour” to develop our vocabulary. Students have been set the challenge of using these words in their wider curriculum lessons… and at home. As a reminder, students are expected to earn 20 points each week: equivalent to 2×15 minute sessions. Find out more here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nW-uRnVWyZk

Set texts / Revision Guides

Y10 – students should have their own copies of Romeo and Juliet: we have some more back in stock if required.

Y11 – students should have their own copies of A Christmas Carol.

New and exciting revision guides for Romeo and Juliet are also available for Years 10 and 11. These do NOT contain the text, but do contain useful practice questions, close focuses on themes and key quotations, and helpful summaries.

All texts are available on ParentPay.

Year 10 Reading Group

Last year’s Carnegie Shadowing Group have evolved into the Year 10 Reading Group. The students have chosen to read  “The Honeys” by Ryan La Sala: described as “a twisted and tantalizing horror novel set amidst the bucolic splendour of a secluded summer retreat,” we can’t wait to get stuck in! If you want to join us – and are in Y10 – we meet on a Tuesday lunchtime in A15.

Staff and Sixth Form Reading Club

Mrs Bowler is pleased to announce the launch of the Staff and Sixth Form Reading Club. Open to all staff and all Sixth Form students, they will meet once per half term in the library. If you’re interested, see Mrs Bowler.

Work of the Week

This week’s work comes from 9HS. Tasked with writing a poem inspired by the trench letters of Wilfred Owen, one student certainly rose to the challenge. We found the star imagery particularly effective: well done!

Social & Health Studies

Students in year 11 are making strong progress in their coursework components.  Child Development students are planning theme days for children in a nursery and Health & Social Care students are looking at the care values and developing their own skills using the care values.  Students who have made great progress in their Health & Social Care work are Aimee Sharp and Carly Dowling – well done!

Geography

Geography field work

Cannock Chase river studies and urban change on Stafford High street.

We were delighted to take all of our year 11 geographers to Cannock Chase and Stafford this week. Students worked to collect data on river characteristics and urban change. It was great to be back learning outdoors, developing practical skills and knowledge. The year 11 assessments next week will test students understanding of the fieldwork. Well done to all of our students who really embraced this opportunity.

School Lottery

Thomas Alleyne’s PTA is a successful and friendly group of parents and staff. We help at school events by serving refreshments and using the proceeds of these events to donate money to departments across the school. This year we have donated to the Art, Music, PE and provided calculators to ensure all students have the access to equipment needed for exams. We have thoroughly enjoyed helping at the performance of Grease,  the Summer Concert and Junior Prize Giving. We would like to take this opportunity to let you know that our AGM is on Monday 26th September at 7.00pm at Thomas Alleyne’s.  We would like to recruit parents of students in Years 9-13 to come along and support the school. If you can’t attend the AGM but think that you could help at one or more of the events that the school hold throughout the year then please email Mrs Young at younge@tahs.net

Head of House updates

Whitmore – Miss Jones

This week’s assemblies have been focusing on the Thomas Character values and the delivery of these in form periods on a Wednesday and Friday. Tenacity was also discussed, we saw plenty of examples of this in the House Cross Country this week. There were many students who turned up and found it difficult but gave their best efforts to finish high in the placings. Well done to all involved!

Elkes – Mrs Brooks

I would like to say an enormous well done to all pupils who participated in House cross country this week. We’ve had excellent results in all categories and the effort from Elkes students was exemplary. House competitions are a fantastic way to build resilience, confidence and to try new experiences.

I’m also delighted that so many pupils have signed up to extra-curricular clubs. For those yet to join, ensure you look at the range of opportunities  available in the extra curricular section. Extra curricular clubs build social bonds, encourage positive relationships and can foster good mental health.

Torrance – Miss Arrowsmith

It was pleasing to see so many of our students taking part in the first house competition this year (cross country). I would like to say well done to anyone who took part. Regardless of your overall finishing position or time you secured points for your house. I have also been impressed with the amount of students taking part in extra curricular activities during lunch time and afterschool across many subjects. Lets continue making the most of all of the opportunities on offer.

Orme – Mr Brassington

Congratulations and thanks to all the students (especially Orme) who took part in house cross country this week. I spoke at our first assembly this academic year about the importance of taking part and it was wonderful to see so many of our students getting involved. Well done to Orme year 9 boys for a respectable second place finish.

My message to Orme students this week is a plea, a call to arms if you will. The current house competition standings have us trailing behind. Students of Orme, we few, we happy few, we band of green tie wearing brothers. We need to rally and improve our position. Mrs Brooks is already incredibly smug at the early lead from Elkes and the handball competition this Wednesday is the perfect opportunity to reduce that lead. Getting involved is key to success and it is the memories that you make in the extra curricular activities that will be looked on most fondly in years to come. I look forward to hearing about our resounding success in this house competition and the subsequent points boost.

18th September 2022

Welcome

Having now completed our first full week, we wanted to share with both parents and students how incredibly impressed and proud we have been for the way in which students have conducted themselves.

At the end of the last academic year, we reminded students of our key values.

We aim to support students to be:

Tenacious

Health and Happy

One community

Mindful

Ambitious

Self fulfilled

Over the last week, we have seen many examples of all these values but in this newsletter we wanted to focus on one particular value, that of ‘One Community’.

During the week, we delivered assemblies to students to pay tribute and mark the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. Some of our staff and students have found this a difficult time. We asked the students to come together, support each other and most importantly be kind to staff and their peers.

The students were incredibly respectful. We would like to take the opportunity to thank the Thomas Alleyne’s community for being a community that looks after each other.

Student News

Performing Arts News

Kathryn W who played Frenchy in our school Production of Grease earlier in the year, won a highly competitive place at the National Youth Theatre summer school. Here she writes about what that amazing opportunity was like.

Over summer , I took part in the junior intake course with the National Youth theatre (NYT). For two weeks, we stayed in the halls of the university of Northampton and each day we played many different drama games/exercises to work on skills , such as: improvisation, clowning ,writing and physical theatre. At NYT there is a definite emphasis on ‘the ensemble’, which means working together -collectively and collaboratively . This was essential in creating our devised piece (based on the theme of ‘Here and Now’).Our piece featured spoken word , music , movement , poetry and was just a celebration of all the numerous things we had learnt on the course! On the last day ,we performed our work to the audience made up of parents , loved ones and our proud course directors.

Overall, this was one of the best experiences of my life and I’d encourage anyone who enjoys drama/theatre/film/music to check on their website -there are so many opportunities for everyone!

Other updates from performing arts.

Congratulations to Ella R who not only achieved a fantastic drama GCSE but has now also been awarded a Distinction for her LAMDA exam.

House Drama and Dance rehearsals went off to an amazing start this week with our houses represented by over 40 students. We still have space for more performers, so come along and join the fun next Wednesday , 3.10-4.15pm.

Head of House updates

Whitmore – Miss Jones

Students in Whitmore have made a great impression during the first two weeks of the term. They all looked fantastic in their uniform as they entered the theatre for assembly on Thursday. This week’s assembly was highlighting physical education and opportunities. The first House competition takes place on Tuesday period 3, we hope many of students take the opportunity to represent our House.

Elkes – Mrs Brooks

Students in Elkes have settled in really well. I would like them to make the most of all opportunities on offer both in school time and afterschool. I will be starting a mental health and wellbeing club running on Wednesdays afterschool in room A11 – everyone is welcome!

Torrance – Miss Arrowsmith

I have been impressed with how well students have settled into the new academic year. Students look smart and ready to learn which is pleasing to see. I would like to encourage all students to make the most of the opportunities on offer afterschool to further their learning outside of the classroom. As House Cup winners, I am looking forward to seeing as many Torrance students taking part in the House cross country P3 on Tuesday. This will be your first opportunity to get house points for Torrance. Lets start as we mean to go on and get to the top of the leader board!

Well done to any students who have achieved credits this week – Keep up the good work!

Orme – Mr Brassington

As a member pastoral team at Thomas Alleyne’s part of my role is to support student’s and their families in attending school  each and every day.

Days off school soon add up and missing lessons makes it hard to catch up, resulting in students having to work harder when they come back and missing vital information that will prevent their progress. Being absent for just 3 days each half term will mean you miss 10% of the school year.

We often think of attendance in percentage points but I think it is vital to recognize how those points translate into hours, lessons and often weeks of missed learning.  If you end the year on 90% attendance that means a student has missed roughly 74 lessons, that’s 93 hours, or almost 4 weeks of lost education.

Here at Thomas Alleyne’s we are always eager to support you with any questions/requests about attendance. If you have any such queries please contact myself (Brassington@tahs.net) or Mrs Major (Major@tahs.net).

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

Our thoughts this week are with the Royal Family after the announcement that Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has died at the age of 96. We will be remembering and celebrating her legacy. A period of National Mourning has started and will continue until the end of the State funeral. The official date of the State funeral is 19 September 2022. This day will be a bank holiday and therefore school will close on 19th September as a mark of respect.

Student news from Charlotte and Grace

From the 27th of June to the 8th of July we took part in the GoSTEM work experience course. This was supported by international technology company 3M, around which the course was based. Though this course is aimed at current A-level students, everyone was given the same 3 projects to work on, all named after 3M sites in the UK.Firstly, for our Aycliffe project, we had to design a disposable respirator, similar to the one used throughout hospitals and work environments during the COVID-19 pandemic. We centred our design around ergonomics and made our respirator both as adjustable and recyclable as possible.

Secondly was the Skelmersdale project. We had to complete an LCA (Life Cycle Analysis) of an SCBA (Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus). This involves analysing the environmental impact of a product from its raw materials, production and its eventual disposal.

Our last project was focused on the Atherstone site, for which we were asked to produce environmentally-sound lighting solutions. We found many possible solutions, but our main suggestion was to use the kinetic energy generated when cars travelled over pressure plates in the car parks and when people walked over pressure plates in busy areas to power LED desk/working area-specific lighting.

At the end of the 2 weeks, we had our graduation ceremony online: we received 3 awards. 2 were for our “highly commendable” work on the Aycliffe and Atherstone projects, and another for being consistent and committed students throughout the course. For this last award, GoSTEM and 3M send us some prizes including 3M Post-It notes, 3M Powerbanks and a BBC micro:bit with an Inventor’s Kit for use in all sorts of coding and robotics projects.

We have decided to donate the micro:bit and the Inventor’s Kit to the TAHS Computer Science and ICT department to spread the benefit of our work.

Y9 – Bedrock Learning
We’re introducing our new vocabulary programme to Y9 students at the moment: Bedrock Learning. This is a personalised learning platform which supports the building of vocabulary and our ambitions to help our students in their quests to become “more critical readers” and “more precise, purposeful and powerful writers.” Crucially for Y9, this forms part of their homework expectations each week. Parents and carers: once your student has received their login details, please support them in regularly accessing this really helpful resource. We expect students to complete 2 “lessons” (each of approx 15 minutes) each week.

Students: remember, there are prizes for students who engage highly and/or make the most progress, so there are lots of incentives to log on regularly (aside from your obvious desire to improve your vocabulary).

Work of the week:

We set some interesting projects over the Summer: here is Laura’s (Y11) revision work on Eva Smith from An Inspector Calls – combining visually stunning artwork with really useful facts and a helpful timeline of events:

Our Sixth Form students have also been sharing their amazing bridging work this week. Here’s Alfie’s work showcasing the texts he’s read over Summer. It’s both beautifully presented but also thorough and well argued: a really impressive start to their A Levels.

English Revision sessions:
We’re finalising the revision timetable for this term in the next week or so, and would appreciate student input. So please let us know if there is anything in particular you/your student would like to cover ahead of the November trial exams.
