4th June School Reopens

 Headteacher blog:

It has been a busy final week of term this week. Teachers and classroom support staff have been completing their final formal lessons with year 11 and 13, working hard to make the most of the final lessons and offering before school and after school interventions. We have been impressed by the turnout in many of these warm up sessions before examinations. Mr Hawthorne for example, reported that 23 of his class of 28 turned in for his Maths ‘warm up’ session at 8.00am earlier this week. Staff will continue to offer lessons during study leave to support any student who feels they would prefer to revise with their teacher. At points when they wish to revise in school, but not be in lessons, we ask that they base themselves in the canteen or library and sign in at reception.
You may have been made aware that due to a bird entering the exam hall on Friday we had to put in place contingency plans to move  a number of students from Year 11 to a new venue. Thank you to all staff, students and particularly our examination officer, Mrs Soskinski, who worked together to provide the best possible alternative solution. The regulations around exams are strict and therefore we had a very short window to put in place an alternative venue.
Saying a formal good bye to Year 13 is always difficult. They have been a superb asset to the school – leading by example and creating a real sense of community in the sixth form. When our Head Girl, Head Boy and Deputy Head Girl and Boy have visited other schools or community events, we have received letters letting us know how well they have represented the school. I would like to take this opportunity to offer my personal thanks to Iona Barron, Ryan Wiggens and their team for the fantastic support they have provided for the school.  Thomas Alleyne’s is better because of the work you have done.  We will miss you and wish you all well for your future. I would also like to mention 2 student leaders who introduced new online packages to the school which have been valued by our students: Anna  Sykes for persuading me that the purchase of Unifrog could only benefit our sixth form students; and Tom Hollins for taking the usage of GCSEpod to a level which places us in the top 10 nationally, and for running Year 11 revision sessions after school. Mentioning names is always difficult and there are so many other students who have raised money for charity, supported younger students in mentoroing, organised the wonderful sixth form leavers event  and supported us as staff by completing duties. Thank you to you all.
This week a team of non-classroom based staff and external consultants led by Mr Storer (our Business Manager) and Mr Mirams (our Site Manager)  have been working on our plans for site development. We are currently exploring the possibility of refurbishing 8 classrooms over the next 12 months and also extending our school canteen. These refurbishments will mean that all of these classrooms will be increased in size, so that they are in line with recommended classroom size, improving the environment in which all our students learn and our staff work within.  In addition to this, the plans for the replacement for the pavilion and mobile blocks are now past the initial design stage. In the very near future, we will be able to share images with you of the plan for the new build. We will also hold a meeting for any parent or member of the community to attend, so you can ask any questions you wish to pose to us and so that you can see the plans. Finally, work has already started on the replacement of the boilers and pipework over a significant part of our school site.
We are very mindful that as a school, we will need to put in place comprehensive plans to be able to carry this work out on a busy school site. We will be beginning the work next half term and much will be taking place over the Summer, however some will run into the next academic year. Therefore we are working hard to minimise the impact on our current students.
All of this work has been funded through succesful bids to the Department of Education or provided as a result of local housing development.
The final piece of work, which we have not yet been successful in securing funding for, is the re-commissioning of our school pool. If you have any contacts, who you feel would like to see this resource for the school and community re-opened, please put us in touch with them. We do not want to lose this facility.
We have now staffed our Teaching School and are thrilled that Mrs Maingay, our new Deputy Headteacher, will be the strategic lead. She has vast experience of leading a teaching school. Mrs Lindsay, currently Assistant Headteacher and Head of RE, and Mrs K Goodwin, our newly appointed Assistant Headteacher, will be the Co-Directors of the teaching school.  Both have significant expertise of leading teacher training and Initial Teacher Training. We look forward to our first strategic team meeting when we will be working with other schools to develop our action plan for the coming 12 months.
Finally, I wanted to mention my Year 9 classes. It has been a pleasure to teach them this year and due to me not being in school next half term, I have now had my final lesson of the year with them. During my time with them, I have particularly enjoyed studying poetry  from 1500 to the modern day, public speaking and more recently, Shakespeare. Having worked with them over the 12 months, I am excited by the potential they have shown in lessons and also the support they offer each other. The very experienced and knowledgable Mrs Fisher, Mrs Baldwin and Mr Hulme, will be taking on my lessons after half term.
I wish you all a lovely half term and a safe expedition to all our Gold Duke of Edinburgh students.
To year 11 and 13, get some rest but keep on with your revision – a very long holiday awaits you all! It will be well deserved.

To help with your preparation for the calculator exams here is a link to a website with revision lists, demonstration videos and practice papers.

These papers and revision checklists are based on the topics that either haven’t appeared or usually have a higher profile. As there are 3 papers, it is likely that topics from paper 1 may appear again, so definitely make sure you revise everything.

U15 County Cup Cricket
On Thursday Thomas Alleyne’s began their county cup cricket campaign against Cheadle High at Cheadle Cricket Cricket Club.  It was a perfect summers evening for cricket with a good smattering of supporters and the speaker system set up.  Alleyne’s were elected to bat first and began explosively with Harvey Belcher targeting the short boundary. Alleynes kep the run rate at around 8 per over but wickets fell at regular intervals, Belcher (14), Hayes (11), Bussell (3), Bosworth (11), Ford (4), Thornton (1), Carrington (0), Walsh (0).  Callum Dreher kept the innings together with 18. But the loss of wicket meant Alleynes were restricted to just 11 off the last 7 overs.  Mathew Payne and Lewis Dawson dug in well to ensure Alleynes batted out the overs.
With a target of 82 off 16 Alleynes had something to bowl at but were now second favourites.  Hostile and accurate bowling from Belcher and Bussell put the Cheadle batsmen under pressure but they were unable to make the breakthrough. The sole wicket being a run out.  Alleynes worked hard in the field though and kept the run rate below the target.  Captain Alex Ford and spinner Gregor Hayes were introduced and Cheadle required 11 runs off the final over.  Hayes held his nerve and Alleynes won by 1 run.
Next week we take on local rivals JCB in the district cup on Tuesday  and Erasmus Darwin on Thursday in the 2nd round of the county cup.

Year 10 Rounders Vs De ferrers

TAHS played a competitive, tough fixture against Deferrers in the glorious sunshine.
The girls met their first objective of batting out the whole 10 minutes with three girls remaining for the final 3 minutes. Amassing a total of 4 1/2 rounders. The half time break saw Deferrers lead by 2 1/2 rounders. The second innings saw TAHS score at a similar rate against an excellent fielding side. Vicky Catterall, Jess Eardley and Libby Fry completed the game as TAHS top scorers all gaining two rounders.
Alleyne’s kept a tight field for the last innings but were blown away by one Deferrers player who hit big into different regions of the pitch on each of her turns to allow Deferrers to extend their lead to 16 1/2 – 10.
Team – Vicky Catterall, Shani Wright, Ellie Alcock, Jess Eardley, Libby Fry, Lily Ede, Katie Lawrence, Lucy Rogers,  Maddie Whalley,  Grace Harvey, Katelyn Emery

U15 Moorlands Cup Home v JCB

On Thursday Thomas Alleyne’s hosted JCB in the district cup first round. JCB won the toss and chose to bat, a decision they were soon regretting when Harvey Belcher rattled the stumps first ball. JCB did then put up some resistance up with a couple of well struck boundaries. Excellent bowling by Belcher (3 wickets for 6 runs), Gregor Hayes ( 2 for 12), Callum Dreher (2 for 7), and Jenson Bosworth (2 for 2) saw JCB bowled out in 13 overs for 39 runs. Alex Ford captained the side well and ensured the overs were bowled quickly. In reply Belcher hit a quick fire 19 and the winning runs came in just the 6th over. In the next round Alleyne’s will face Moorside.

After half term we will entertain Erasmus Darwin in the next round of the County Cup on Tuesday 5th June 2pm at Uttoxeter Cricket Club.

Year 9 Rounders

The second rounders fixture of the year 9 season took place on Thursday evening in the glorious sunshine. De Ferrers came over to play against Alice Boothby, Holly Chatfield, Amelia Hadgett, Freya Hadgett, Scarlett Simister, Abby Moore, Jess Banner, Frankie Tooth and Jazz Hardisty. We batted first and lost some early wickets meaning we were bowled out early after scoring 5 rounders. De Ferrers then batted and we caught 3 out within the first 9 balls and used that momentum to bowl them out before their time restriction. They finished the first innings with 6.5 rounders. During the second innings we were again bowled out early but put up a good fight. Our girls again bowled well to stop De Ferrers using the extra time gained and giving us 2 mins 17 seconds to try and catch their target of 13.5 rounders. We delivered a strong performance and finished on a total of 12 meaning we lost by 1.5 rounders. All the girls played really well and Amelia Hadgett was nominated as Woman of the Game. Well done girls. We have two fixtures first week back on Tuesday and Wednesday at home, see you there!!!

Science News

This week Mr Gilson’s A Level Biology students have been investigating mitosis or cell division in garlic root tips.  Cloves of garlic are suspended in a small beaker of water until they develop roots, which grow extremely quickly.

The roots were prepared by the students with ethanoic alcohol and hydrochloric acid, placed onto a microscope slide and stained blue – revealing the cell detail, including the chromosomes within the nucleus.

The photograph, taken looking down the microscope, shows the cells undergoing all the stages of mitosis – prophase, metaphase, anaphase and telophase.

This superb slide prepared by Ruby Woollard, Isla Stubbs and Bryony Hall is the finest example of mitosis ever seen at School – very well done!

This week’s Science Students of the Week selected by Mrs North are:

Year 9

Ruby Taylor-Caine and Lewis Taylor for excellent recent biology results

Year 10

Ellie Clayton and George Hill for a much improved performance in their biology recently

This week’s Animal Care Students of the Week also selected by Mrs North are:

Jessica Bailey and Aimee Wild for outstanding effort in Animal Care course work

Well done!

Online Safety

The impact of social media can be amazing – the promotion of events, the re-connection with friends from times past and the sharing of memories – are all fantastic ways of communicating.
Unfortunately social media is not always used in such a positive way.
 Advice regarding uploading pictures:
Only upload pictures that you’d be happy for a parent to see (the internet is a public place). Don’t post pictures of you or your friends wearing school uniform (this lets people know where you will be). Tick the “no pic forwarding” option on your settings page – this will stop people forwarding your pictures to anyone without your consent. Who are you communicating with? Do you know? Do you really know?? Have you met them? If you know someone… who knows someone… who knows someone….. it doesn’t make them your friend.
Advice for students:
What you put on social media sites is there forever. Consider the information you share – you don’t know who your friend’s friends are… or your friend’s friends’ friends… Be aware that information on your profile could potentially be viewed by anyone. Consider you photo – what info does it give about you? Understand the meaning of ‘joint enterprise’ Be aware that university admissions and employers WILL check your internet activity.
Students/Parents & carers please visit https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/ for further information

Reminder to Parents

In the event of an emergency with your child, have you got a new phone number (especially mobile)? Have you moved? Has there been a change in your circumstances? Has there been a change regarding any medical information for your son or daughter?
If so, it is vital that you alert school so we can change the details on our system. Please contact school as soon as possible.

Teaching & Learning

On Monday, all teaching staff participated in the last Teaching and Learning Community to feedback on the projects they have been involved in over the year.  These have covered a range of areas including supporting post-16 learners and student leadership in learning.  Lots of good practice was shared to help staff to prepare for the next academic year.  Thanks to all teaching staff who have contributed to these projects over the year.

Huge congratulations to Max Hayes in Year 9 who has taken home the National Award for Young Football blogger of the year. A phenomenal achievement.

Well done also to Year 11 and 13, many of whom have sat over 8 examinations in just 5 days. It takes real stamina and resilience to cope with the pressure and they have shown just that. If any parent or young person needs support please let us know.

Finally, I wanted to let our parents and students know that I will be having a knee operation on the 12th June. Whilst I will be keen to return to work as soon as possible, we have planned for my absence for the the rest of this academic year.
We are very fortunate that Mrs Maingay, our new Deputy Headteacher, has been able to start with us early to cover my absence. Therefore I have been able to work closely with both Mr Brunt and  Mrs Maingay as they take on the roles of Headteacher and Deputy Headteacher respectively from June 8th.
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask.

Year 11 Celebration Day – Friday 29th June 2018

May I take this opportunity to congratulate our Y11 students on a successful and positive start to their final GCSE examinations. They have impressed all members of staff with their maturity and positive attitudes.

Year 11 students will complete their full time attendance at school and timetabled lessons on Friday 25th May. After this date, they are expected to attend scheduled revision sessions and GCSE examinations only. Full school uniform must be worn for all of these occasions.

We understand that students may need to catch the bus to and from school during the examination period and it is not possible or appropriate for them to study at home. Therefore when there are not supervised lessons, if your son or daughter needs to study in school they are invited to use either our school canteen or the library. This is also the case if they have 2 or 3 exams in a day and need somewhere to study between examinations. If they do choose to study in school, after May half term, they will need to sign in the visitors book.

We look forward to celebrating the end of the examination season with our students with the traditional Leavers Celebration Day.

This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to celebrate with their friends and teachers. Formal attire is expected for the day. We begin at 10am and conclude at 2.00pm, with a buffet served at lunchtime and a morning service at St. Mary’s Church. Parents are welcome to join us for the Church Service, should you wish. It will commence at 10.30am.

On arrival at 10am, students are expected to go straight to the following rooms, where their Tutor will meet them. We will leave at 10.20am for the Church Service.

11E1 – 20, 11E2 – 19, 11E3 – 18, 11O2 – 16, 11O3 – 15,

11T1 – 13, 11T2 – 12, 11W1 – 11, 11W2 – 10

On our return to school, students will be expected to remain in the Theatre. This is our base for this day, to avoid any disruption to lessons and internal examinations for the rest of our students in years 9.10 and 12. We also respectfully request that all students do leave the school site at the end of the celebrations at 2pm.

Celebration Day is an enrichment part of the school year & is therefore by invitation only. I must stress that we continue to expect high standards of behaviour throughout the examination period & would still reserve the right to remove any invitations to this day. Individual Heads of House will contact parents as appropriate should this affect your child.

I look forward to a happy and successful day on Friday 29th June. Please do not hesitate to contact your child’s Head of House if you have questions.

News from PE

Here is reporter Max and his report from the Sentinel Cup final:
Rounders Vs William Allit
The Year 10 rounders team travelled to William Allit to compete in an epic opening fixture. A decent start was made by TAHS restricting the big hitting opposition to 8 rounders after the first innings. At the half way point Alleyne’s trailed by 1 and half rounders.
A much improved performance was seen in the field with Vicky Catterall, Shani Wright and Jemima Pope taking great catches. Communication was great from all of the girls so the correct decisions were made when fielding the ball. Katie Lawrence, Grace Harvey, Lucy Rogers, Ellie Alcock  & Katelyn Emery made solid throws into 2nd and 4th post. Whilst Jess Eardley delivered some quality bowling and Lily Ede covered the backstop and 4th post areas.
The batting also improved in the 2nd Innings with Shani, Jess, Grace & Katelyn taking chances and keeping the score board ticking with 1/2 rounders. The final score being TAHS 15 – William Allit 14 1/2.
East Staffordshire District Athletics Championships
After 2 weeks of competition at Shobnall our Year 10 Girls Athletics team has been crowned district champions.  The boys came a creditable 4th out of a total of 16 schools.
This week on the track – Lottie Cooper was 5th in the 100m, Vicki Catterall 2nd in the 200m, Lily Ede 2nd in 300m, Shani Wright 1st in 800m, Abbie Hulbert 2nd in 1500m.  For the boys George Foster who was making his debut won both the 100m and 200m by sizable margins.  Lewis Dawson was 2nd in the 400m.  In the Field- Shani Wright was first in Long Jump, Ellie Allcock 2nd in both Shot and Discuss, Lucy Carr 3rd in Javelin, Euan Walsh was 3rd in Shot, 4th in Discus.  Well done to all that took part.

 Headteacher blog:

We are thrilled to be able to share with you that Thomas Alleyne’s High School has been selected to be a national teaching school. I would like to thank Mr Brunt and Mr Osborne-Town for their work on securing this status for the school.

Please see below a press release from the Department for Education:

The headteacher and staff at Thomas Alleyne’s High School  part of the Uttoxeter Learning Trust, have been selected for top roles supporting schools in challenging circumstances and training new teachers.

Thomas Alleyne’s High School  is one of over 40 schools that has been selected to become a national teaching school in the latest recruitment round, taking a leading role in recruiting and training new entrants to the profession.

Mrs Julie Rudge is one of more than 50 headteachers to be appointed to the role of national leader of education in the latest recruitment round

Introduced in 2011, teaching schools are excellent schools that work with partner schools in an alliance to provide high quality school-led initial teacher training and professional development opportunities for teachers at all stages of their career.

They raise standards through supporting other schools, especially those in challenging circumstances, and ensure that the most talented school leaders are spotted and supported to become successful headteachers.

Julie Rudge Headteacher said:

“It’s an incredible honour to receive this designation on behalf of Thomas Alleyne’s High School. Our commitment to securing the best quality of education for children in the Uttoxeter area is unwavering.

‘’We look forward to building on the work already in place within Uttoxeter Learning Trust to further develop teaching and learning, both across our trust and beyond.’’

Mr Brunt said:

“The designation of Thomas Alleyne’s as a Teaching School, is a wonderful recognition of the significant work that had been undertaken over the last four years to develop the quality of teaching and learning in the school.”

Alison Trenery Chair of governors said:

The Governors are delighted to hear this news which is a tremendous achievement for a comprehensive school in a semi-rural area like Uttoxeter, and which is the result of the impressive progress made by Julie Rudge and her colleague staff in taking the school and the Uttoxeter Learning Trust forwards.’’

Lord Agnew, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for the School System, said:

“I’d like to congratulate Thomas Alleyne’s High School and Julie Rudge on being appointed as a teaching school and a national leader of education. They should be very proud of this achievement.

“Teaching schools and national leaders of education are supporting other schools, attracting and training the best new teachers and developing the next generation of leaders.”

Successful headteachers will be invited to attend a regional induction event.

 GCSE Warm-up Sessions

A large number of departments are offering pre-exam booster sessions and the full program is outlined below:

RE Revision

Please see the attached Presentation with information about the Saturday Revision session 10-12.

Please note that there will be also warm up sessions from 8am on Monday 14th and Wednesday 16th May in room 33A and 33B.  All Year 11s welcome.

Year 11 – RE Revision plan

revision hour

Computer Science & ICT

The first written papers of the 2018 GCSE Season are the Computer Science Paper 1 & the ICT written paper on Monday morning.
A large number of revision resources, question papers and websites have been shared with the students via social media and insight for both qualifications.
Please can you encourage these to be used over the weekend.
A breakfast session will be held on Monday morning at 8 am for both subjects. This will be an ideal opportunity to focus the mind, go over some quick-fire knowledge based questions and fully prepare the students for the exam.
They have all the resources and knowledge at their fingertips and they need to go in full of confidence and attempt every question, that is the only way they will get marks!!
The students have all worked incredibly hard and the end is insight – so please pass on our best wishes to them all and we hope to see them at 8am on Monday.

Year 11 Geography

The first geography paper is on Tuesday 22nd May. This is the Physical Geography paper and the topics to revise are Natural Hazards (earthquakes, volcanoes, tropical storms and climate change), the Living World (Ecosystems, Tropical Rainforests and Hot Deserts) and the UK Physical Landscape (Rivers and Coasts). The GCSEPod resources for these topics have been reassigned to all Year 11 Geographers in order to help with revision. The following YouTube clips are also useful for revision but also for exam technique on how to answer the questions.

Students will also need to ensure the know how to read an Ordnance Survey Map as one of these is likely to come up in this paper. This link is to the BBC Geography – Get Lost series and is a quick explanation of grid references but there are also clips on scale and contours.
Paper 3 is on Monday 11th June, a month from today! This paper focuses on Geographical skills, fieldwork and the Pre-release material. Every student will have been given a copy of the Pre-release material for them to read over and annotate. They will be given a new copy for the actual exam. The Pre-release material is a decision making exercise based upon the construction of a reservoir. The following mind map gives some structure on how to prepare for this exam. There is also a mock paper with answers to help students prepare and some questions regarding the fieldwork.
Revision warm up sessions will be taking place on Monday 21st May, Monday 4th June and Friday 8th June from 3.15 to 4.30 in room 6.

Round 2 is next Wednesday also at Shobnall
The Year 9 team played their first rounders game of the season on Tuesday evening. We played William Allitt at home and there were a few nervous faces before we played. By the end of the game those faces were smiling and victorious. The girls won 16 – 3 1/2 after being 10 1/2 – 2 at the end of the first innings. The team were led by captain Alice Boothby and made up of Freya Hadgett, Eve Bednall, Holly Chatfield, Frankie Tooth, Jess Banner, Abby Moore, Jazz Hardisty and Scarlett Simister with Amelia Hadgett being given Girl of the Game for her excellent bowling. May 4th 2018

These are the last assemblies in the theatre for a number of weeks due to exams.
Assemblies w/b 8th May
Tuesday is a whole Year 9 assembly led by Julie Rudge
Wednesday is a whole Year 11 assembly led by Tim Brunt and Rebecca Lindsay
Thursday is a whole Year 10 assembly led by Tim Brunt and Rebecca Lindsay
I thought that the saying below would be apt for Y11 students as they approach their exams, they may sometimes feel that the revision is defeating them but they must not give up on it and be defeated!
Thought for the Week

“We May Encounter Many Defeats But We Must Not Be Defeated.” – Maya Angelou

Maya Angelou was one of the top civil rights activists and embraced a spirit of positive thinking and sheer determination.

 Headteacher blog:

The team spirit and determination shown by our Year 11 Football team at the Sentinel Cup Final was impressive this week.  Despite being up against a very challenging team, they persevered through to the end of the match and should be very proud of their achievements.
The Athletics team had superb success on Friday at the County Athletics Championship with the boys taking the title and the girls finishing 3rd. Congratulations to all involved.
This week, I met with the Headteachers of our first and middle schools. We looked at ways in which we can further improve transition, the plan for school improvement across the pyramid and also received feedback on a Maths project which has been led by Mrs K Hanson from Richard Clarke school.
As year 11 enter their final 10 days before their examinations, we would like to wish them all well. We know hard work will be rewarded and that many have applied themselves effectively. We urge all students to use these last few days well. Year 10 students will also be preparing for their end of year examinations. GCSEpod is an excellent resource for students in Year 9 and 10 to start their revision please urge them to log on this weekend.

6th form

Our wonderful Sixth Form Administrator, Mrs Walton, has worked wonders yet again. She has printed and collated all the letters to be sent to prospective Year 12 students regarding their conditional offer for a place within our Sixth Form and information regarding all taster sessions. These will be sent out at the start of next week. Please read then carefully and if you have any questions please email Sixthform@tahs.org.uk.

Linked to this we will be sending letters out to students regarding the opportunity to become ABC Mentors (Anti Bullying Campaign). We ask for a number of volunteers from our new Year 12 to work with the new intake of Year 9 students. They will need to be available for the intake evenings and on the Middle School Transitions Day.

A quick reminder that the school day for all Sixth Form students is 8.40 and we do expect them to attend all tutor registrations wearing the correct uniform.
The Year 13 are working very hard towards their qualifications and we hope that if they have any questions or queries then they speak to the subject teachers for specialist advice. Using a variety of revision tools is recommended by all staff and we encourage past papers to be completed as part of this process.

 Interventions

Please be reminded of the interventions available to pupils as listed below:

Year 11’s – We Need You!
As an ABC Mentor you will

We will be sending letters out to students regarding the opportunity to become ABC Mentors (Anti Bullying Campaign). We ask for a number of volunteers from our new Year 12 to work with the new intake of Year 9 students. They will need to be available for the intake evenings and on the Middle School Transitions Day.

You will work with at least two other Year 12 students and you will be expected to attend one weekly tutor session with the Year 9 form you are assigned to. The hope is that over the course of the year, you will get to establish a relationship with the students in that form and be a source of support to them.

Some sort of community service is an expectation of all students in the Sixth Form and this is an ideal opportunity, this could also be used for the volunteering section of your DofE.

If you would like more information please come and see Mrs Young in room 15.

News from PE

County Combined Athletics

On Friday Thomas Alleynes travelled to Northwood stadium for the County Finals of the Combined Events Athletics.
The event consists of teams of 4 boys and 4 girls who all compete in 5 events.
The boys did 100m hurdles, Long jump, Javelin, Shot and 1500m. The girls do 80m hurdles, Long Jump, Javelin, 200m and 800m.
Alleyne’s started well with good solid performances.
The boys finished first as County Champions after a dramatic 1500m which needed our team to beat all of JCB’s team to take the title. The was achieved thanks to an outstanding piece of front running from Owen Carrington and a great last lap from Joel Grout.
This result moved Owen up to 3rd place overall and Joel maintain 2nd in the county.
Lewis Brookhouse had got us off to a good start in the hurdles and Alex Shaw performed consistently all day.
The girls faced stiff competition including a former Australian athlete. Lucy Carr was our leading hurdler and javelin thrower, Shani Wright the highest scoring long jumper, 200m and 800m runner. The rest of the team were Lottie Cooper and Lily Ede who worked hafd to give Alleynes an overall finish of 3rd.

Yr9 Options – Update

Year 9 students will receive letters next week regarding their Year10 optional subjects. The curriculum that we offer is a broad and balanced one, that allows students to make progress and be successful in the future. We would like to remind students and parents that when we allocate subjects, we follow a process that aims to meet as many of the students preferred 8 subjects but also to create a curriculum that balances individual student choice with the choices made by the wider student body.

Yr11 GCSE Geography

As we fast approach the exams I would like to remind students and parents that students will sit 3 exams for GCSE Geography. Paper 1 is Physical Geography and focuses upon Hazards, The Living World (Ecosystems), River and Coasts. Paper 2 is the Human Geography and focuses upon Cities, Development and Resources. Finally, Paper 3 is a skills based paper and focuses upon the pre release material on the proposed development of a reservoir and the students fieldwork. This link is to the campaign groups website on which the pre release material is based. It useful to have a skim read of some of the opinions in order to develop your knowledge and understanding.
I am sure many of the Yr11 students will have visited Carsington or Blithfield so they will have their own knowledge and understanding of some of the impacts of reservoirs.
The following images are examples of mind maps that might be useful in focusing students revision. I would also like to remind students of the revision resources on GCSEPod. If it is exam technique that students think is an issue the following YouTube clips are useful in how to answer exam style questions.
