Years 10 and 12 will be continuing to undertake their mock exams. The exam timetable for next week is below. During tutor time this week, all year 10 and 12 students have been given guidance regarding exams. We wish them all good luck with these next week. As a reminder, please can all students ensure they arrive promptly, fully equipped and in full uniform for all exams. Mobile phones and smart devices must not enter the exam room.

We are hoping that all students will join us for the results days which are Thursday 18th August for A-Level’s and Thursday 25th August for GCSE pupils. We will send out further information regarding this before the Summer. However, if you are unable to collect your results on this day, please use the link below to complete the results collection form (this form has also been handed to students in school). This must be completed and bought back into school for the attention of the exams officer. We will unfortunately not be able to email out any results.
Year 11 – Year 12 Transition / Taster sessions
All students have been sent their personalised letters and timetables for the transition lessons starting w/c Monday 27th June. Students need to attend all of the highlighted sessions on their timetables and one of Mrs Young’s talks. Any queries, please contact Mrs Walton on firstname.lastname@example.org

Year 12 mocks
All students must remain on site and attend lessons as normal after any mock exams.
School Walk – Year 12
Reminder to return your permission slip with your payment, or:
Provide a letter from your parent/carers to inform the school that you will not be attending (this is not something you can opt out of yourself and we do need parental letters).
Let your form tutor know if you would prefer to marshal rather than walk. If you wish to marshal, you do not have to pay.
If you choose not to attend, you are legally required to be in school doing some work instead. The school walk day is not intended as a day off for anyone.
Signing in and out
Students need to be on site from 8.40-3.05pm and if they leave site briefly for food etc they MUST sign out and back in. This is both a legal and safeguarding requirement. No one should leave site to go to the gym or similar during the school day.
Year 12 students GCSE certificates
Year 12 students can collect their GCSE certificates from the Sixth Form office. Please collect them at break and lunch time only.
Sixth Form Finance:
The school has been allocated a Discretional Bursary Fund (DBF) which students are able bid into throughout the academic year providing they meet the financial criteria set by the school and outlined in our DBF policy.
For the academic year 2021-2022 students are eligible for funding of up to £400 if their parental income is below £27,000 (proof required) or if they were designated as pupil premium. If a student is a looked after child (LAC) they may be entitled to up to £1,200 of financial support. Students must use this funding to support their Post-16 education. For example, Sixth Form uniform, transport costs to and from school, textbooks, revision guides, course materials, IT equipment (up to £150), educational visits, UCAS application Fee, University entrance tests etc.

Carnegie Shadowing and Book Recommendation
We’ve started looking closely at our texts now, starting with opening lines. After some heated debate between groups, brilliantly supported by our Sixth Form helpers, we decided the text with the best opening was “Wolf Road.”
This our book recommendation this week, too. We loved the fact its first chapter is called “The Ending” – but the students also felt it was a really good description of the setting. Work of the Week
This week we’re featuring the work of Macie, in Y10. Macie was working extremely hard on writing accurate sentences to describe. She used ideas from our class word wall, Ray Bradbury’s “A Sound of Thunder” (the highlighted words/phrases) and wove these effectively into her own work. She even pushed herself and experimented with one of our favourite sentence structures: a colon followed by a list of three. Well done, Macie!
The founding team behind the new school newspaper met on Monday to decide on a name, share ideas for articles and features and start to allocate tasks for putting together our first edition.
We are excited that ‘The Thomas’ is now starting to take shape and the wonderful students who came along were full of excellent ideas. They have all headed off to carry out interviews, research, draft and take photographs; this week we will start to work on on the layout design.
Anyone who is interested in being involved in any way is invited to come along to Monday’s regular editorial meeting.

Texts to purchase
Reminder: current Y9 students should have a copy of Romeo and Juliet: we recommend the CGP “Complete Play with essential notes and practice questions.”
Later in the year they will also need An Inspector Calls.
Current Y10 students should have a copy of “A Christmas Carol” ready for the first week of September.
Recommended versions are available on ParentPay, or students are welcome to provide their own.
Due to the large volumes involved, texts purchased via ParentPay will be delivered to students via English lessons before the Summer holidays
English Taster Days – Keele @ Staffs
Anyone in current Y11 or Y12, who is considering one of the Englishes at Uni is encouraged to sign up for one of Keele’s taster sessions. They’re running on Tuesday 19th July, and will include sessions on English generally; creative writing, film and media. Miss Thorley would like to nominate Callum H (9U3) for impressive positive attitude to learning in Physics.
Holly T (10U2) for producing high quality revision resources for her upcoming mocks.
Hannah S (10H4) for excellent effort in revising for upcoming mock exams.
Mrs Simpson would like to nominate James D (9U1) for great engagement and class contribution in Physics.
And also, Year 12 Chemistry class for excellent attendance to the first fortnight of Chemistry intervention sessions.
House Music Event is Friday 8th July. Rehearsals will be after school every day next week on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Any students who wish to be involved, please come to a meeting on Monday lunchtime at the start of lunch in room 67.
